From Richland, WA, US | Born in Werner, North Dakota
Ruby Lucille Grade
Beloved Wife, Mother, and Grandmother Ruby Lucille Grade was taken from us suddenly on Sunday, January 13, 2008.
Ruby was born on November 7, 1930, in Werner, North Dakota, to Andrew and Edna Jane Johnson. She married Altorn Grade on December 19, 1952, in Glendive, Montana, and celebrated 43 years of marriage before Al’s death in 1996.
In 1954, they moved to Richland where they started a family, raising six children and ten grandchildren.
Ruby held many jobs, retiring from Lamb Weston after more than 20 years of service. She enjoyed the camaraderie of her coworkers, establishing life long friendships.
Ruby enjoyed reading, antiquing, sudoku, scratch tickets, and telling everyone she met about her family. Mom could always be seen around town shuttling grandkids to and from activities. She never missed a performance, sporting event, dance recital or school activity. She enjoyed her special times with each one of us.
Ruby’s sole purpose in life was to teach, support, and love her family. She always put her kids first and instilled in them a core set of values of honesty, integrity and hard work. She has left a legacy that can be seen in her children and grandchildren.
Ruby is survived by her children and their spouses: Sandra Grade of Spokane, Altorn and Cassie Grade Jr. of Okinawa, Japan; Randall and Ledeen Grade of Boise, Idaho; Gary and Deanna Grade of Kennewick; Cindy and Scott Parnell of West Richland; Kathy and Gary Christensen of West Richland; and her ten grandchildren: Danyiel, Joshua, Alaina, Stephanie, Andrea, Jaclyn, McKenzie, Samantha, Colby and Niklas. Her sister Gertie Markham of Texas and her niece Ruby and husband Marc Askenazi of Texas.
Ruby is preceded in death by her husband Altorn and her parents.
To know her was to know how proud she was of her family and their accomplishments. We will miss all the little things she did everyday to make our lives special. We will never forget all the good times and many lessons she taught us as that is what we will keep with us in our hearts forever.

Ruby’s house backs up to ours–we were fortunate enough to share back fences with her. She was the greatest neighbor–always cheerful, positive, and fun. We enjoyed many wonderful, friendly conversations with her. We will miss her and want to express our deepest sympathy to your family. We know you realize that you were blessed to have such a wonderful mother and grandmother. Sincerely, Bill and Carol
To the Ruby Grade family, I was so sorry to hear of your mom’s passing. She was such a neat person. She used to ride with me to InterLake school to see Sandy and my daughter Wendy. I enjoyed getting to know Ruby on those trips and about her family. I know she will really be missed by everyone who knew her. Please except our deepest sympathy in your loss.
I am very sorry for the sudden loss of your mother, grandmother Ruby. As you allready know–she was an A++++ person. I am very lucky to have known her,and will continue to use the great advice she allways gave me till the day i die. She was a fantastic co-worker,and better yet,a very good friend. Sorry i missed her memorial service,i have a bad case of the flu. She will be dearly missed by all people that had the gift of knowing such a dear person. Barry Miller
Kathy,
I was so sorry to hear about your Mom. I guess I can say I know what you are going through right now seeing how I just went through a similar thing so… If there is anything that I can do for you just let me know:
My sincere sympathies to the family of Ruby.
Those who have made an impact on our lives remain forever in our hearts. Your Mother left a real impact on those she knew. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. Love Aunt Gertie
Cindy & family,
I was saddened to hear of your Mom’s passing. When we were young, I was always a bit afraid of her–she was so loud! But I know now, having six kids and four of them boys! will do that to any mother. And she was such a good mother to you: she got us transferred out of the same first grade classroom, so we could each learn more by being separated during the school day. And whenever you came to spend the night at my house, she was willing to come get you at any time of the night, if you got homesick. The number of times you got homesick just goes to show how much you loved your mom and your own cozy house.
I enjoyed reading in the memorial message that she was a devoted grandmother; your whole family was blessed to have her as your mom and grandma.
Blessings to you all in your time of loss.
