Dolores Jane Shumate Richland, WA

Surrounded by her loving family Dolores died peacefully at home on May 4, 2008. She was born in Weiser, Idaho on May 17, 1929 to Bill and Melba Chapman. After her father's work was complete on the Grand Coulee Dam her family moved to Sunnyside and then to the Tri-Cities in 1943 subsequently opening the Twin City Motor Supply. Many of her favorite memories centered around the lifelong friendships she developed while attending Pasco High School, which she graduated from in 1947. She attended Central Washington State College and retired from her position as the secretary to the Dean of Students for Columbia Basin College in 1989.

Dolores enjoyed traveling and had the opportunity to visit many beautiful countries with her loving husband John. She was a member of the Cathedral of Joy and cherished her close relationships with her Silver Eagle and WOW friends. She was a very thoughtful and generous person putting other people's needs above her own. Dolores understood the importance of God, family and friends and was always present to lend a hand or provide a kind word. We will miss our loving mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend.

She is survived by her sister Billie Chapman of Hermiston, sister-in-law Alice Shumate, daughter Kathie Jorgensen John, daughter Linda DeLannoy Bob, son Mike Shumate Jennifer, daughter Kathy Ramirez Jose, 10 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Dolores was preceded in death by her parents, her husband John, and brother-in-law Jack.

On Saturday May 10, 2008 a 3:00pm celebration of life service at the Cathedral of Joy, 1153 Gage Blvd., Richland, WA, followed by a 6:00 PM public graveside at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Richland.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Cathedral of Joy or the Tri-Cities Chaplaincy Hospice House.

  • I knew Doleres from The Cathedral of Joy’s WOW Bible Study and when she heard my brother Barry was in Iraq, she approached me to ask if she could send him packages of God’s love. Many times we talked and I kept her informed of his whereabouts. I know she and her WOW sisters prayed for him and other soldiers. She meant a great deal to my brother who stated that he expected stuff from us–but not such dear kindness from a total stranger!! When my brother returned home safely, our church gave him and others a standing ovation for his service. My brother was touched but it was more important that he meet Delores and personally thank her.

I can imagine how much she meant to her family and close friends since I know how much she touched a stranger away at war.

Thank you for sharing her with us.

  • My Dear Family,

Your mother was truly a blessing to many, but we were especially blessed to call her our Aunt Dolores, Aunt DoDo and best fan/friend. I am so thankful to her and the life and love God allowed her to share with us…most importantly my cousins, Kathie and Linda, who are like sisters to me. Aunt Dolores made our lives special, made me feel special and gave me memories that I will cherish for a lifetime. She loved our family and she gave us such precious gifts from her heart…family togetherness/roots and oh, so much fun, laughter and love! I will miss her forever, I will love her always and I thank God for her unending love and support. I know heaven is even more wonderful now with her beautiful flare. She will always be “Forever in my Heart”.

My love to you all, Susan
