John Leon Green

John Leon Green, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend to many, went home to the Lord on August 15, 2008. He passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family at the age of 80. John, a long time resident of Richland, was born on May 2, 1928, in Albion, ID and spent his early childhood there. John later moved to Eureka, California with his family. Then in 1947, he moved to Yakima, Washington where he completed his schooling. On April 28, 1948, John went on a blind date and met the love of his life Aileen Matney, known as "Ricky" by her friends. After a brief 4 month courtship, they were married in Yakima, Washington on August 28, 1948. John and Aileen were to celebrate their 60th Wedding Anniversary in two weeks. After several odd jobs in the Yakima area, John went to work for General Electric in August 1950. He later transferred to the 300 Area for Battelle until his retirement in 1990. John was a highly skilled and respected employee who worked as a laboratory technician and supervisor for over 42 years. He returned to Battelle for 2 years as a consultant until permanently retiring in 1992. After retirement, John and Aileen took many trips to California to visit family and friends. They later moved to Pine Hollow, Oregon to their home on the lake. They remained there until his illness required them to return to the Tri-Cities in July 2007. John was an avid hunter and fisherman and was lucky enough to harvest one of the largest Elks 8-point ever taken in Oregon. John was also a very accomplished golfer and was thrilled to get a hole-in-one. He was also an avid bowler. In the 1960's, John was very active in scouting and was a scout master for many years. John's oldest sons Lonny and Daniel both achieved "Life" status. He was also owner and operator of "Green's Lawn Service". For many years, he designed and installed numerous sprinkler systems, with the help of his children, throughout the Tri-Cities and lower Columbia Basin. He was a man of many talents and like many individuals of his era, could do just about anything. He was an outstanding mechanic, craftsman, and a master gardener. John is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Aileen and six children: Judy Dan Gregory; Lonny Nancy Green; Daniel Carol Green; Nancy Steve Harris; Peggy Jim Duvall; and Randy Green Rhamie. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, his sisters Colleen, Darlene, and Diane; and his surrogate sons Tom and Micky Hemphill. John is preceded in death by his father Jesse, mother Melba, and brothers Eugene and Boyd. John left a legacy of family and friends and will be truly missed by his loving wife and children. We will miss you "Papa" and we all thank you for the memories that will be cherished for a lifetime. The family would also like to extend special thanks to the staff at Hospice and to the Reverend Tim Ledbetter for his heart felt kindness during our time of need. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 19, 2008 at Einan's Funeral Home at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Public viewing will be held Monday, August 18, 2008 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Tri-Cities Chaplaincy Hospice on behalf of John Green.

  • My condolences to the family of John Green. “Johnny” is what we used to call him. I worked with him at the 325 building hot cell at Hanford 50 years ago already!. We were doing innovative experimental separations and operations of equipment with radioactive elements. He began work under Jimmy Gibson and later became the hot cell manager himself. He was a great worker and leader, whose skill, proficiency, and work ethic provided the project with many successful hot cell experiments.. We all worked as a “team”, which was very important to our success. We were fortunate to have a man like Johnny to join us there when he did. He was an admirable man and I am privileged to have known him.
