Edgar Carl Norman
Edgar C. Norman Richland, Wash.
Edgar Carl Norman Jr., age 70, died Sept. 4, 2008, at his home in Richland.
Gar was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer earlier this year but he remained dignified and upbeat until the end.
Husband, Dad and Grandpa, we will miss you, but your life is an example that we will strive to live up to, because we know that "Families are Forever."
Gar was born June 20, 1938, in Salt Lake City, Utah, the oldest child of Edgar and Beth Norman. He lived his early years in the Salt Lake City area and was named outstanding senior at Murray High School in 1956. He served a mission in Sweden for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, returning in 1961. He baptized his father a member of the church before he left on his mission and his dad passed away while he was serving.
Gar married fellow Murray High grad Molly Ledgard on August 17, 1961, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They celebrated their 47th anniversary just a few weeks ago.
Gar attended the University of Utah and graduated with a degree in metallurgical engineering in 1963. While at the U, he was a member of the Phi Kappa Alpha and Sigma Gamma Epsilon fraternities. Gar and Molly's first child, Tom, was born in 1962.
He began his nuclear career in 1963, working for the Atomic Energy Commission in Idaho Falls. He then went to ORSORT, an advanced government training program for nuclear engineers, in Oak Ridge, Tenn. He returned to Idaho Falls in 1964, where his daughter Jill was born.
He worked for a short time at the AEC in Germantown, Md., before returning to the Northwest. He earned his doctorate in engineering science from WSU, doing much of his research work at Hanford. His son Rob was born in Moscow, Idaho, in 1968.
The family then returned to Maryland where Gar worked for the AEC, which later became the Department of Energy. Their daughter Betty was born in 1970. The family moved across the country to Sunnyvale, Calif., in 1972, for just a year, then returned to Maryland, where Gar's youngest child, Jeff, was born in 1975. Gar moved with his family to Richland in 1979 to work at FFTF. They have lived in Richland for the last 29 years. Go Bombers!
Gar retired from DOE in 1993, then worked at various Hanford contractors before finally finishing his nuclear career in 2002.
Dad's greatest loves were his family, his church, traveling, the Mariners when they played well and computers. He and Molly served a mission for the LDS Church in 2003, as hosts at Camp Zarahemla, near White Pass in Washington. He served in many capacities in the church, including stake high council, in a bishopric, quorum presidencies and always a faithful home teacher. He and Molly also served as workers in the Columbia River Temple.
He loved his family immensely, always watching his children in their various activities. He lost his right arm when he was 2, but he prided himself on being able to do almost anything. He and his family never viewed it as a handicap.
Gar is survived by his wife Molly, of Richland; his children, Tom and Shelly, of Pasco; Jill and Kevin Wistisen, Cedar Hills, Utah; Rob and Tina, Queen Creek, Ariz.; Betty and Shannon Taylor, Vancouver, Wash.; and Jeff and Melanie, Mesa, Ariz.; siblings, Tad wife Tove, Alpine, Utah; Van wife Maude, Bountiful, Utah; Alice husband Bob Erickson, deceased, Boise, Idaho; and John wife Chris, Salt Lake City; brother-in-law John Ledgard and wife Glenda, Puyallup; sister-in-law Betty Ledgard, Murray, Utah; 19 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother-in-law and 2 grandsons, Riley and John. The family would like to thank the Hospice staff for their compassion during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice at the Chaplaincy, 2108 W. Entiat Ave., Kennewick, WA 99336.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2008, at the Kennewick LDS Stake Center on Gage Boulevard in Richland, next to the LDS temple. Viewing will be from 7-8 p.m. Tuesday and one hour prior to the services, both at the church.
Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Richland.

Dear Molly & Family
We are sadden to hear of Gar’s passing. He was a good neighbor to us and a kind man. We pray that you find comfort at this difficult time. You are in our thoughts.
Dad,
What an example of dignity and strength you have been to us all. I have so many wonderful memories of you as my Dad, and my kids’ Grandpa. How lucky I am and how much the Lord must love me to have sent me to you.
Your family is in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. We love your son, Jeff, and he always had wonderful things to say about his Dad. Together you raised a wonderful husband, father, and, to us, brother-in-law. May the Lord be with you to give you comfort and peace.
Mary and I wish to send our condolences and prayers for Gar and his family. I have known and worked with Gar for more years than I can count and had the priviledge of being his Doctorate advisor while he studied at WSU. My respect for Gar as a professional and as a kind and honest man whose professional and ethical standards were much admired. He was one who always looked for the best in people and for solutions to the technical problems we all faced during the development of the Fast Flux Test Facility program. May God bless Gar and his entire family during this time of the celebration of his life.
Oh, Mollie: We’re SO sorry to hear of Gar’s passing. We weren’t aware he was ill. You and your family are in our thoughts and prayers.
Dear Molly, What a valiant fight Gar fought! He will be sorely missed but remembered fondly by the many whose lives he touched. We remember the first day we moved into the neighborhood and the help and friendship you both showed to us. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for wonderful memories.
Dad,
I can’t believe that your time with us here is over. I am thankful for the knowledge that I have that this life is not the end, and that we are a forever family. Thank You for being such a wonderful example. No one can measure up to you. You did your job as our dad, grandpa, and husband the absolute best ever. I love you. Jill
You rock, Dad!
I’ll miss ya.
Molly and Family, Bobby and I continue to mourn at Gar’s passing but we rejoice that he is now free of pain and suffering. Knowing Gar, I suspect that he is setting up his computer systems and will be in contact with you, the kids and the grandkids shortly. We have fond memories of our friendship going back the days at the U of U, Idaho Falls, Maryland and Washington. We enjoyed the few days we spent with you both last month. It is clear that Gar will be missed by family and by the community. Our thoughts and prayers will be with you all during this week. Unfortunatly, we will be unable to attend his services but we will be there in spirit.
love and best wishes… Phil and Bobby Colton
Dear Molly and children,
I just read Uncle Gar’s obituary and reflected on his honorable and eventful life. He was such an example! I am so glad I got to see him a few months before he passed away. I have such good memories of my two trips to Maryland when I was a teenager and all the other times I spent with your family. You have been in my prayers for several months and I will continue to pray for your comfort at this difficult time. Gar will be sorely missed.
Love,
Liz Norman Strikwerda
Dearest Molly, Betty, Rob, Jeff, Jill, Tom and familys:
I was sad to hear of Gar’s flight away from home, but happy to have known Gar through Betty and our High School days. Smile. I have a fond memory of Gar, Molly, Betty, Jeff and myself while driving in a crazy snow and ice storm all the way to Utah to see Jill and family, the Utah Jazz and much more. Gar was a skilled animal at the wheel and got us home safely. I’m sure I lost some weight on that trip from road conditions stress and Cool Ranch Doritos, but nonetheless a fun memory. Gar had to have been an amazing husband, father and supporter to create such a great family. My smiling memories are proof. Although I’m sad for your loss, I know your family has each other and your faith.
Please take care of each other with love and laughter.
Sincerely and with love, Leslie Bell
Hugs all around
Aunt Molly,
We love you.

Dear Molly and Family,
Our love and prayers continue to be for you in this time of sorrow. I think my history with Gar goes back further than any other living person. As brothers just two years apart we share many wonderful childhood memories. Gar was such an example of courage, determination, humility, love and devotion to family and to righteous living. We will miss him sorely until we too join him and other loved ones in the eternal world.

Aunt Molly,
You are in our thoughts and prayers. We pray you will feel peace and comfort from our Heavenly Father. We wish we could have come up, but August is to small to make the trip. We love you.
Aunt Molly,
I am so sorry that we are not able to be there with the family. You and your kids are in our prayers! Last night I prayed that you might find peace today, and the months and years to follow! It gets better. It is hard to believe now, but it really does! Not a day goes by that I do not think of my Dad, and love him and miss him, it just doesn’t hurt as much anymore. In fact there is great peace in knowing that he is there guiding my thoughts and actions helping me and Brad, Thomas and especially Tyler. He is never far away especially when I need him, his advice or his strength! I pray that you will find this peace soon! I love you very much!
Erin
