Dan Stepnewski died Friday, December 19, 2008. He was born in Manistee, Michigan, October 12, 1926. He graduated from Manistee High School in 1944 and was in the US Army from 1945-1946. He received a B.S. degree in Engineering from the University of Michigan in 1950, and a Masters degree in Chemical Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1959.
He was employed as an engineer for more than 43 years. First with General Electric Co in New York state and in Richland, Washington, then continuing with Pacific Northwest Laboratory of Battelle Memorial Institute, and finally with Westinghouse Hanford Company all in Richland, Washington. He was a member of several technical societies and outdoor-activity clubs. He also enjoyed skiing, mountain climbing, fly fishing, and travel.
He was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church in Richland.
Dan was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Lillian, and three sisters Florence Greve, Esther Pomeroy, and Gertrude Taber. He is survived by a brother Joseph Gwen Stepniewski of Manistee, Michigan and by many nephews and nieces.
A memorial mass will be celebrated Saturday, January 10, 2009 at 11:00 AM at Christ the King Church with Rev. Thomas Champoux celebrant.
His remains will be buried in Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Manistee, Michigan.
Dan and I worked together in Richland, a fellow engineer and a good one with professional integrity. We skied and hiked together as he loved the outdoors. His wit and wisdom will be missed.
The Copernicus Endowment at the University of Michigan was deeply saddened by the news of Mr. Stepnewski’s death in December. Please convey our sympathy to his family and friends.

Uncle Dan was one of my mom’s Gertrude Taber brothers. All of my aunts and uncles were, and still are, very special people to me and are a part of many, many good family memories.
Uncle Dan was the uncle who lived so far away from were we grew up in Bay City, MI. His visits were rare but always exciting. He’d been to many different places around the world and seemed to know many different people. To a little girl, as I was back ‘in the day’, he was almost unreal to me! I remember his as a gentle, intense, interesting person who also was interested in others.
The last time I saw Dan was a few years before Mom died in 2001. He had come into Bay City for a visit and Mom and Dad brought him over to my home. He admired some oak wood work in our home and some old military pictures of my ex-husbands father, who was a Polish farmer who served as a Polish soldier during World War II and immigrated to the US with his Russian bride.
I’m left with memories of Dan’s kindnesses, caring nature and gentleness that he always extended to me and my family.
I know Dan left many people who cared for him deeply. I offer my sincere condolences to all of them for the loss they are experiencing and pray that their grieving hearts be comforted and healed.
