Kenneth E. Waud
Kenneth Edwin Waud passed away peacefully, December 27, 2008, at Hospice House Hospice at The Chaplaincy in Kennewick, WA.
Ken was born August 14, 1926, in Pasadena, CA to Joseph and Blanche Waud, the oldest of three sons. He moved to Nyssa, OR as a youth and graduated from Nyssa High School. After high school graduation, he moved with his family to Madras, Oregon and farmed with his family before attending college. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Farm Management from Oregon State University, Corvallis, Oregon, in 1950. He married Billie Jean Huddleston in Lonerock, Oregon, July 2, 1950, and the newlyweds farmed with his parents in Madras.
He began his professional career as a County Extension Agent in Prineville, OR, and continued that career in Othello and then Ephrata, WA, where he was promoted to Chairman of the department. While in Othello, he received his Masters Degree in Entomology from Washington State University, Pullman, WA. He further advanced to District Supervisor out of Pullman, and then Prosser, WA. He returned to Ephrata, where he retired. He became an appraiser of farm land before retiring once again. Two years ago he moved to Richland, WA, and resided in an apartment at Alterra Wynwood retirement center.
Ken was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He loved hunting and fishing and spending time at his cabin near Leavenworth, WA. He also enjoyed maintaining a beautiful yard with fruit and nut trees and lots of flowers. During his lifetime, he was a 4-H leader, a livestock judge at many county fairs, and an accomplished sheep shearer. He enjoyed traveling and attended numerous National County Agent conventions with his wife. He loved music and especially outdoor concerts on warm summer nights. While living in Richland, he enjoyed the bi-weekly joy rides and special events at Wynwood, and was recently elected to the greeting committee for Wynwood's new residents. He enjoyed his daily latte and visiting with everyone at Starbucks. He never knew a stranger and was known for his big smile, bear hugs, warmth, and sense of humor. Ken belonged to the Ephrata First Presbyterian Church, serving as Deacon and Elder. He attended Central United Protestant Church for the two years he resided in Richland. He was a member of Kiwanis, Elks, and he was a Mason, as was his father.
Ken was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Blanche Waud, his brother Norman and his wife, Billie Jean Waud.
He is survived by his three daughters and their families:
Jeanne and Roger Wong, Eugene, Oregon¬ Grandson Alex Wong, wife Lisa and Great Grandson Kalan, Columbus, Ohio.
Granddaughter, Dr. Winnifred Wong, St. Petersburg, Florida. Rebecca Waud, Portland, Oregon ¬ Granddaughter Cassidy Mandeville, fiance Jessy Gozum, Portland, Oregon. Grandson Wade Mandeville and wife Erica, San Francisco, California. Anita and Mike Case, Richland, Washington¬ Grandson Michael Case, wife Laura, Great Granddaughter, Emily, and Great Grandson, Niko, Redmond, Washington. Granddaughter Holly Simon, and husband, Aaron, and Great Grandson Michael Simon, Orting, Washington. He is also survived by one brother, Jack Waud, and two nephews, Ed and Jim Waud.
The family would like to acknowledge and thank the staff and caregivers at Wynwood, Kadlec Hospital re-hab, and Hospice at The Chaplaincy for the loving care they provided for Ken.
There will be a graveside service at the Ephrata Cemetery, 333 E Street SW, Ephrata, WA at 10:30 am, Friday, January 9, followed by a reception at the First Presbyterian Church, 172 Ivy Street SE, Ephrata. A memorial service will be held at the Central United Protestant Church, 1124 Stevens Drive, Richland, WA on Saturday, January 10 at 1 :00 pm, with reception following.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice at The Chaplaincy, 2108 West Entiat Avenue, Kennewick, WA 99336.
