Gordon U. Hughes

Gordon Hughes Smokey passed in his sleep on January 25, 2009 at Avalon Rehab., Pasco, Washington.

Gordon was born in Gordon Texas on June 7, 1916, the first of six children to Charlie Floyd and Flora Lue Snider Hughes.

At 16 years of age his father was killed and Gordon went to work at a CCC Camp in Wyoming, helping to support his family. After camp he stayed in Wyoming working on a ranch, then joined the teamsters driving heavy equipment, and eventually moving to the Tri-Cities in the 40s.

In the 1950s he met his wonderful wife, Dorothy Hughes, and after 10 years of dating they were finally married. They lived in Kennewick until 1963 when they bought a farm unit on Block 17 in Pasco, where they stayed until Gordon went to Avalon in March 2006.

Gordon was a true cowboy from his cowboy hat down to his old worn boots. He loved the outdoors and spent the last years of his life staying at their cabin in the Blue Mountains Smoke' Place, where he and Dorothy rode horses, hunted and fished and stayed in the 1941 Zimmer he bought new while working construction in the area.

Gordon loved his grandchildren, Keri and Jason, and spent as much time with them as possible, teaching them to drive all the farm equipment, cars stick and automatic, horses, motorbikes, and much more. You could always find him playing with them outside or on the floor playing board games with them.

We will miss his smiling face, blue eyes rare for an Indian, road trips, stories, ear shattering sun sneezes and his huge hugs.

Preceding Gordon in death were his mother Lue Hughes and his father Charlie Hughes.

Surviving him in death, his wife, Dorothy Hughes, daughter Marlene Hughes Kuch and Richard M. Kuch, grandchildren Keri Kuch Henley and Greg Henley, Jason Kuch and his son great-grandchild Trenton Kuch, sisters Ona Florence, Geneva, Roberta, Ardith, and brother Clarence Hughes.

A private memorial was held by his family on Friday, January 30, 2009.

  • I’ll miss Smokey. Smokey was a good neighbor to have, living just down the street. He would often stop by on his 4-wheeler just to say ‘hi’ and to reminisce about the good old days of the past.

He and my father enjoyed talking to each other since they were about the same age and had a lot in common.

Smokey always had that twinkle in his eye. He was always up to something. He was a good fellow and I will always remember him.
