Harold Martin Greenwald

Harold Martin Greenwald went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Thursday, February 19, 2009.

Harold was born on October 2, 1916 to Ernest and Antoni Greenwald in Wisner, Nebraska. He was raised on the family farm near there. In his early 20's, Harold traveled west and, for a short time, worked on ranches and farms in the Yakima and Odesa, Washington area. He began mining on Big Creek near Yellow Pine, Idaho.

In 1941, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in World War II until honorably discharged in 1945. Harold fought at the Marshell Islands, Philippines, and Okinawa. He received the American Defense Service Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, and the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal.

After the war, Harold returned to mining on Big Creek. He mined in several places around Idaho and eventually found the Queens River near Atlanta, Idaho. The Queens River was a special place that Harold found irresistible. For the rest of his life, he spent much of his time there.

On May 1, 1952, he married Marjorie Crooke. The lived in a cabin Harold built on the Queens River and in a house in Atlanta until 1960. During that time, they had two sons, Wendell and Dale. In 1963, Harold and Marjorie bought the Harley Crooke homestead near Deer Flat, Idaho and began farming. Harold farmed, mined, and worked at the White Satin Sugar beet factory in Nampa, Idaho until he retired in 1981. After retiring, Harold had more time to work on his mining at Queens River and around Atlanta. He also became interested in treasure hunting and traveled all over the West and as far as New Mexico looking for buried treasure. In his 70's, Harold mined a tunnel through sold rock for a length of 1000 feet by himself. In his 80's he ran his D-8 dozer and core drill looking for high-grade gold. Harold had a long life that was filled with enjoyment of the mountains, forests, streams as well as prospecting adventures. Harold had a natural gift of storytelling. He loved to share his stories of the old mining camps and his adventures in treasure hunting. He loved it when he could get together with friends and family and tell his mining stories.

Harold is survived by his brother Lorenz, his brother Robert, two sons Wendell and Dale, and a daughter-in-law Dianne who he loved as his own daughter.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 21, at 10:30 in the Lake View Bible Church, 1217 2nd Street South, Nampa, Idaho.
