From Richland, WA, US | Born in Olyphant, PA

Eleanor Louise Massmann

Eleanor passed away at home on March 3, 2009, surrounded by her husband of 54 years and the love of a close and caring family after an extended illness. Eleanor was born in Olyphant, PA on August 31, 1928, the fifth of six children born to Jessie and Charles Morris.

Eleanor graduated from Olyphant HS in 1946 and worked for several years at the Globe Store in Scranton, PA in accounting. She also worked as a professional model for the store. At the time, Eleanor was at the cutting edge computer technology utilizing the first generation IBM punch card system.

She married her best friend and the love of her life, Patrick Massmann, in February of 1955. Eleanor and Patrick Pat alternated life between Louisiana, Texas and Oklahoma, following the fortunes of the oil industry while raising a family of four children. In the early sixties, the family moved to Florida and participated in the evolution of the Gemini and Apollo space programs, culminating in the first landing of a man on the Moon. Eleanor and Pat made sure that the children understood the historical importance of that time and place.

In the seventies and eighties Eleanor's family moved to North Carolina, Washington, Ohio, Colorado and then back to Washington with the nuclear power industry. No matter where travels required took them, Eleanor made a beautiful and loving home for her family. In addition to a flair for decorating, Eleanor was an incredible cook and always honored any and all guests with elegantly prepared meals.

Also known as "Nick" or "Aunt Nick," so named by a couple of young nieces, Eleanor was known for her patience, kindness, and attention to detail. Her quick wit, sense of style, grace and love of good conversation will always be remembered. She was fiercely proud of her children and grandchildren, but her greatest pride was reserved for her husband, Pat, whom she always referred to simply as "the best" with a smile and a nod of emphasis. Mom's loss leaves a void in our family that cannot be replaced. Her love and devotion to family will be missed forever.

Eleanor was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Jessie, sisters Marion and Frances, brother Charlie, and son-in-law Rick. She is survived by her husband Patrick of Richland, sister Jessie of Selma, TX, and brother Joe and wife Chiyoko of Aberdeen, MD; daughters Lynn and husband Gerry of Renton, WA, Ruth of Richland and Mary of Kennewick, and son Steven of Anchorage, AK; granddaughters Michelle, Robin and Andrea, and grandsons Kenny and wife Courtney, Nick, Joe, David, Patrick and John; and numerous nieces and nephews around the country.

A memorial service will be held at 2pm Friday, March 6, 2009 at the Memories at Sunset Event Center in Richland, Washington, with inurnment to follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. A private visitation was held on Wednesday the 4th from 3pm to 5pm, at Einan's Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made in Eleanor's name to the Hospice at the Chaplaincy, 2108- W. Entiat Ave, Kennewick, WA 99336.

  • Dear Uncle Pat and kids,

Liz and I were so sorry to learn of Ellie’s passing. We have always enjoyed the Christmas cards that she sent us these past years. You are all in our thoughts and prayers. I still have lots of wonderful memories of when you, Ellie, and the kids would visit Pittsburg when we were little kids. I remember being fascinated about your being so close to rockets in Florida. God bless all of you. Love, Mike and Liz

  • Dear Uncle Pat and cousins,

I am so sorry and sad. I have such fond memories of Aunt Nick as far back as I can remember. She was always so elegant and kind. I liked it when she called me “Cuz” and her Sweedish meatballs were the greatest! Brian and I always loved to go visit Aunt Nick, Uncle Pat and the cousins. You all are in my thougths and prayers. Love, Karen Cuz

  • Lonell & I were devastated to learn of “Ellie’s” passing. We have been good friends for many years, starting in Tulsa at SSC/LORAC. We were together last at our house in Satellite Beach at a party, circa 1964. We also remember going to a dance in Melbourne featuring the Big Band of Vaughn Monroe. We had great times together – we will miss Ellie, God bless her. To Pat: Cherish her memory and smile when you think of her.

    Love,

    Lonell & Bill Hunsicker

  • I am the oldest grandson of Pat and Eleanor Massmann. First, I would like to say that I loved my Grandmother very much and she will be deeply missed and I am sorry that I could be there due to my deployment overseas. I remember all the fun times we had together on holidays, and all the other family events that I will cherrish forever. Still to this day I could never figure out how to cook her world famous scrambled eggs that she would make for me when I would come over for breakfast. She was the best Grandmother a grandson could ask for and I am glad to have had her in my life. I will miss you very much Grandma and I will always have a special place in my heart for you.

    Love, Your oldest Grandson
