John Pierce

John Pierce, 86 of Richland, Washington died March 6, 2009 at Hospice at the Chaplaincy, Kennewick. Born on January 16, 1923 in Ozark County, Missouri, in 1955 he moved to Richland where he worked as a barber. Later he owned and operated Johnny's Uptown Barber Shop. After graduation from Thornfield High School, Missouri he joined the Army where he served at the Battle of the Bulge in the 87th Infantry during World War II. He is a life-time member of the VFW Post 7952, Richland.

He is survived by his daughter Janice Gunter and her spouse Curt along with their children: Lorin Janna Kelly, Lori David Meyer, Shannon Lee, Randall Gunter, Jason Lynnette Gunter, Jerrod Shelley Gunter, and Julie Gunter plus 13 great-grandchildren; his son, Gary Pierce, and his children Desirae and Kimberly Pierce; his brother Tom Pierce and his spouse Joann along with several nephews and nieces.

Preceding him in death was his parents, Frank and Ester; brothers Roy and Bill as well as an infant brother and sister; his wife of 46 years Edna Pierce.

John or "Johnny" as he was called by his friends was avid hunter and fisherman. While cutting your hair, he always had a good story to tell you. He loved fancy fast cars and never let a stray animal go hungry. He will be dearly missed.

Thanks to all the doctors and nurses from Lourdes, Avalon, and Hospice who cared for my dad during the last few years of his life.

A graveside service will be held at 3:00 pm at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Richland on Friday, March 13, 2009. A reception will follow at Memories at Sunset Event Center, located on the cemetery grounds.

Please accept my sincere condolencess on your loss.

I remember your Dad cutting my hair at the Uptown Barber Shop…every two weeks…from 1955 to 1964. I believe my last haircut with him was August 1st, 1968…just 2 days before I got married.

Johnny…thank YOU for serving your country during WWII…Salute!

  • Janice and I shared many wonderful Sundays cleaning your barber shop. We were the “original” Highschool Musical.

John, you were such a memorable person, and I will never forget you.

  • I was sad to hear about Johnny’s passing and wanted to let you know how sorry I am for your loss. Johnny was a good friend to Dad and Grandpa Ray. His loss is not just a loss to you but to all who knew him, the community and the country that he served.

His presence here was a blessing and hopefully we can all live up to his example.
