I was Joe’s secretary in 1978. We always had a great boss/secretary relationship. He had a great smile and a firm but gentle manner in the way he dealt with problems and people. JOY SMITH GEST
My first contact with Joe was in 1951 when I arrived at Hanford as a new college graduate. As my supervisor in the 234-5 Analytical Laboratory I quickly learned that Joe embodied those qualities that my taught me to repect and
learn from. His quiet demeanor and his quiet way of dealing with interpersonl issues still stands as an example to learn from. As time moved on and our elationship expanded to coworker, friend and neighbor my respect grew as he continued to set the example as a quality person. He will always be thouht of as a mentor and as a
friend.
Joe was my first manager in the Analytical Laboratory. He provided the quiet stability and direction for that operation without over-reacting to every unexpected situation that arose. He was a mentor that shaped my professional development for the nearly 40 years that followed. I sincerely thank him for that early guidance.
