Hava Fenner Bates

Hava Bates peacefully passed away August 15, 2009. She was born in Alamo, Texas April 27, 1921. She was headstrong, outgoing, fun-loving, and one great fisherman. She greatly enjoyed her family, their many camping and fishing trips and being surrounded by friends. She never knew a stranger and was happiest when she had someone to feed.

She married her handsome husband, Ivan Bates, in the Salt Lake Temple in 1941 and was blessed with five children. Shortly after World War II, work at the Hanford Site brought them to Richland where they resided for 32 years. Hava was involved in many of her children's activities including serving as a Camp Fire Girls Leader and Cub Scout Den Mother. She belonged to a bowling league and was part of a pinochle club for over 50 years. Hava and Ivan moved to Basin City in 1979 after Ivan retired. There she enjoyed one of her favorite hobbies-gardening. She spent long hours in the garden and the kitchen canning preserves to share with friends and family. Her rose garden was tended with care and flowers adorned her home. Her other hobbies included making beautiful needlepoint pictures, hand-stitched tablecloths, and intricate quilts. She was also a great seamstress and made dresses for all the important occasions. Hava and Ivan felt the need to return to the Tri-Cities so in 1996 they moved to the newly developing Road 68 area of Pasco and set up their last homestead.

Hava is survived by her children Betty John Roberts, Dori Clark, Jim Bates, and Vickie Derek DeMille, 12 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Ivan and daughter Judy Pauly.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 22, 2009 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Road 108 Building 4305 Crescent Road Pasco, WA with viewing at 10:00 a.m. and service at 11 :00 a.m.

The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to Callaway Gardens and Tri-City Hospice for their special care of Hava.

  • To the Bates Sisters and their families: I consider it a great blessing that I got to meet and spend a little time with Hava at her home during the holiday season of 2007. She was a pure joy to be around and her kind nature was reflected in everything she did.

  • Aunt Hava was always the positive, happy Aunt in my life. I loved being around her because of her happy spirit. Our family reunions were great occasions and that was because Hava always made them filled with fun activities and laughter.

I am so happy that she is with Uncle Ivan and the rest of her family. I can see her up there keeping everyone laughing and upbeat.

I will always have fond loving memories of both Uncle Ivan and Aunt Hava.

    Love always,

  • My Deepest Sympathy in the parting of your Mother. I remember how outgoing and fun Aunt Hava was and loved her sense of humor. She had an amazingly positive attitude and a zest for life. I don’t ever remember seeing Aunt Hava without a smile on her face. I loved it when her and Uncle Ivan would come and visit at Mom & Dad’s in Morgan, UT. We had fun as kids with Jimmy & Vickie riding the old mare Sioux in the pasture. Her and Uncle Ivan always seemed like the perfect couple with his quiet mannor and her outgoing spark. I wish you the best and comfort in her passing. Take Care, Love Annette
