Walter Leo Whitten

Walter Leo Whitten passed away peacefully in his sleep at home in Pasco, WA, on Monday, August 24th. He was 81 years old.

Walter was born May 17, 1928 in Portland, Oregon. He was raised in Toutle and Castle Rock, WA. He was in the Army for three years, stationed in Japan, during the occupation at the end of World War II. While in the army, he was a vehicle inspector and his job was to wreck Jeeps to find the various points of failure. The Army would then study the Jeeps and figure out how to fix and fortify them.

After arriving in the Tri-Cities 58 years ago, he married Kathleen White in 1951. They had three children, Sheree, Larry and Robin. He later married Barbara Thomas on April Fool's Day in 1970, accepting Holly as his daughter, while onlookers murmured, "This will never last...".

Walt was the former owner of Walt's Exxon on Lee Blvd. in Richland for 26 years. He was also a member of the American Legion, Post 34. Of all of the many accomplishments and crazy events in Walt's life, he was the most proud of his children.

In his youth, Walt bought many, many stale hamburgers from Harry Truman at Spirit Lake. He also rode his horse Baldy, on the Cascade Trail and across railroad trestles every summer. As an adult, Walt earned his private pilot's license at age 49. He spent many enjoyable hours in his plane, Betsy, flying into and out of the wilderness areas all over the Northwest.

He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Barb, son Larry Karen Whitten of Pasco, daughters Sheree Don Norquist of Chelmsford, MA and Holly Roberts of Sunnyvale, CA, brothers Les Dena Whitten and Bill Diane Whitten, all of Castle Rock, WA, sister Laura Bert Martineau of Longview, WA, grandchildren Laura, Brent and Janelle Norquist, Kyle and Ryan Whitten, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leslie and Margaret Whitten, daughter Robin Whitten, and brother John Straw.

Graveside services to be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, August 29th at Sunset Memorial Garden, 915 By-Pass Highway, Richland. At Walt's request, attire should be casual: "come as you please".

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor his memory may make donations to: Hospice of The Chaplaincy, 2108 W. Entiat Avenue, Kennewick, WA 99336.

Special thanks to: Dr. Stanley Hales and staff of Lourdes Medical Center, Pasco, WA; Dr. Michael Kwasman and staff at Spokane Cardiology; and the wonderful staff at Hospice, especially Bonnie Jo, Joan, Stephanie, Linda and Chaplain Tim.

Most who knew Walt knew of his sense of humor, generous nature and crazy stories. His retirement motto was: "No office, no hurries, no business, no worries. Available by appointment for: breakfast, lunch, dinner, fishing, travel or expert advice." Walt never met a stranger, and was never, ever at a loss for words...

  • Walt will be truly missed by myself and my family. Hunter really enjoyed hearing about all of Walt’s adventures. He would get the biggest kicks out of all of Walt’s hunting stories. Jami always enjoyed seeing Walt and really appreciated his quick humor. As for myself, I always loved having Walt sit in my office. He would always ask if I had a minute, as he would always want to share a story of some sort. The fun of it was, that over the course of time I was able to finish the stories for him, as I am pretty sure that I have heard the bulk of them many a time! We will miss him dearly.

  • Walt was always very caring and giving to our family. We enjoyed the times of laughter we had with Walt. You could always count on a good joke from him. Sad to say we hadn’t seen him much over the last few years but the memories we have will last a life time. You will be missed Walt!

  • Sorry to hear of Walt’s passing. I’m an old timer from Richland and knew him when he had his station on Lee Blvd. My kids went to school with Larry and Karen. I’ve seen Walt many times over the years, and enjoyed visiting with he and Barbara a lot.

  • It is a widely excepted view that in life you really only have 5 true friends. I am proud to have had Walt at the top of my list. A chance meeting in 1975 as Walt, Barb, and Larry began their flight training, turned into a 34 year friendship that had no bounds or rules. The adventures and experiences that followed are far too numerous to list here. Walt’s sixth-sense was as acute as anyone I have ever met. His ability to boil any situation down to where it made clear and perfect sense for everyone to understand was uncanny. Our heart goes out to Barb whose life has forever changed with his absence. In the after life Walt would not want us to morn him, but celebrate his life, humor, and the time we spent with him. To help work through this difficult time, I pick just one of the many adventures I have experienced with Walt and Barb over the years and it quickly brings a smile to my face.

Walt will be sorely missed, has was one of a kind

  • We were surprised and saddened to hear of Walt’s passing. He always seemed so energetic, enthusiastic, and cheerful. Mostly we would see him at various boating or promotional events where he would be proudly extolling the advantages of Northwest Jet boats. We were fortunate to own one of Larry’s early entries into that venture. Anyway we always reminded Walt how pleased we were to have been an owner of one of these fine boats. He would grin appreciatively and we would get into discussions of fishing or flying our airplanes or some other of his many interests. We will miss seeing him at those times. Of course we will always be interested in seeing the newest boating features, but it won’t be quite the same. God bless you all.

  • The stories that came from Walt were incredible and inspiring, even if I had heard them before I would always take the time to listen to them again. He will be greatly missed.

  • I am lucky to have met Walt in these last few years. He is an amazing man and will be dearly missed. I looked forward to seeing him come in my work and it always brought a smile to my face. Knowing that everytime he was in that i would hear another amazing story, watch him make friends with everyone that was in the establishment and always left us with complements. He will always remain in our hearts and will never be forgotten.
