Sidney W. Smith
Sidney W. Smith, 90, passed away September 13, 2009 in Richland, Washington. He was born to Orin and Rosa Smith on August 29, 1919 in Kennewick, Washington, and was the second-oldest of four children.
Sidney grew up in Tustin, California and graduated from Tustin High School. After graduation, he attended Orange City College for 1.5 years studying to become a draftsman. In 1942 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was stationed at Pearl Harbor where he was a pharmacist's mate second class. He was honorably discharged in 1945, receiving an Asiatic Pacific Campaign Ribbon.
He married Lona Jean Rimel on January 31, 1942 in Orange, California. They began raising a family in 1945, three sons and a daughter. He worked for the Anaconda Wire Company in Orange, California for nine years before deciding to sell their home and move to Richland, Washington where he accepted a job offer from the General Electric Company in 1955 as a lab technician. In 1965 he transferred to Westinghouse Company and worked there until his retirement. While at Westinghouse, he earned certification as a senior engineering technician in 1966 while attending night school at Columbia Basin College.
Sidney was a quiet man with high morals and values which he passed on to his family. He enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting and participating in family events. He had a passion for sports, especially baseball, where he loved coaching and managing youth teams. He was also an excellent wood craftsman. He enjoyed watching John Wayne movies and listening to country music.
Sidney was preceded in death by his loving wife, Lona; son, Dennis; parents, Orin and Rosa Smith; brother, Orin Smith; and sister, Buddie Gutherie. Sidney is survived by his step-mother, Hattie Smith; son, Don; daughter, Debra and husband Bruce Boudreau; son, Dean and wife Bonnie Smith; sister, Margarite Owings; sister-in-law, Jean Smith; grandsons, Dean and Chris Bonewell and Jamie Baxter; great-grandson, Triston Bonewell; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Nicheside services will be held at 9:30 am Thursday, September 17, 2009 at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Richland.
Dad, thank you again for your unselfishness, your guidance, the memories, and your love. We will miss you – your loving family.

You will forever be a memory in my heart. I loved every minute I shared with you at Alterra. Watching western movies, feeding your Beta fish, hearing stories and seeing pictures of your beloved wife, Lona. You were such a great man!
Sid, I will miss u very much and treasure the memories i have of u at Alterra. Everytime i see a John Wayne movie it makes me think of u. Sid u were such a kind and gentle man You will always be in my heart! God Bless
