Daniel Asa Reynolds

Daniel Asa Reynolds, age 66, passed away from pancreatic cancer on Saturday October 10, 2009 at Kadlec Regional Medical Center in Richland, Washington surrounded by his loving family. He was born February 9, 1943 in Murray, Utah to Grant Daniel Reynolds and Edna Hamblin Reynolds. When he was two years old the Reynolds family relocated to Richland, Washington.

Dan graduated from Columbia high school in Richland in 1961. In 1967, while in college, he was drafted into the United States Army and trained as a medic at Ft. Sam Houston in Texas with the highest score of his class, but was subsequently reassigned as company clerk at Ft. Hood, Texas. He received a Masters degree in Chemical engineering from Brigham Young University in 1971. After graduation he was employed for two years at the Naval Weapons Center at China Lake, CA; then returned to the northwest and for two years worked for Longview Fiber Company. While visiting family in Richland a man randomly offered him a position at Hanford. For the last 33 years Dan enjoyed working for multiple companies there. Dan earned the distinguished title of "Fellow Scientist" and did great work at the Hanford Tank Farms, being a great example for others to follow in his work ethic and high standards.

He faithfully served as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in the Eastern Atlantic States mission. During his time as a missionary he served in Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, and West Virginia. He honorably and faithfully served in many positions of service in the church. He especially enjoyed serving with the scouts and the youth. Dan was a zealous genealogist and taught his wife to be the same.

Dan and Marilyn were married September 9, 1966 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Both were raised in Richland. They knew each other from childhood. During their years of raising children they enjoyed exploring the western states. He loved the outdoors. They had many adventures and misadventures with cars, trailers, and boats. Dan enjoyed the outdoors, including camping, fishing, canoeing, and hiking and biking. Dan was a wonderful father and grandfather always interested and actively involved in their lives.

Dan was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Marilyn, and his children Nathan, of Portland, Oregon; Jonathan and wife Joelle of Pullman, Washington; Jacob and wife Karen of Richland, Washington; Benjamin Charles of Seward, Alaska; Matthew and wife Mindy of Twin Falls, Idaho; Tammy of Richland, Washington; and seven grandchildren: Caleb, Joshua, Bea, Collin, Isaac, Mali, and Simon. He is also survived by his sister, Gayle and husband Gary Sansom of Grandview, Washington; brother, Richard and wife Michele Reynolds of Purcellville, Virginia; sister, Ann Reynolds of Ogden, Utah and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Dan was very good to his parents, especially his mother, who received much loving and tender care from him during her widowhood and difficult health problems. As a youth he helped her with her florist business. Dan was also a devoted husband to Marilyn during all the years of their marriage, helping her with her health problems. He was a great cook and loved to read. He was always hardworking, good natured, patient, cheerful, and never a complainer.

Dan was known and will be remembered and loved for his intellect and humor. Two hours before his death he could still remember the molecular weight of lead. He had a joke for every occasion. He was an asset to his wife, family, and community and will be greatly missed.

A viewing will be held at Einan's Funeral Home on Tuesday, October 13th from 5:00-8:00 p.m. The funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 14, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at the Jadwin Chapel, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 1321 Jadwin, Richland. Dedication of the grave will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, 7325 W. Deschutes, Suite A, Kennewick, WA 99336.

  • I was saddened this morning to read Dan’s obituary and send my condolences to the family. He was a special collegue both while we were out in the 200 areas and at the Vitrification Plant. We had many discussions concerning the chemistry in the tanks and the material destined to come to the Vit Plant. He had an ennourmous reservoir of information that he willingly shared if he was consulted but he did not force his knowledge onto those not willing to listen. I will miss him and his humor.

  • Dan was my cousin. He was also my teacher and mentor while I was at Hanford. He was one of the few experts that I know in his particular field, and he taught me and helped me to learn so that I could get my Master’s degree. He could take almost any problem and use an analogy to simplify it down to its very essence. He was always a friend and willing to take time to do anything that you asked him. He was extremely intelligent, and at the same time humble and kind. He was a peacemaker. When there were problems, he was willing to take the first step to mend any wounds or hurt feelings even though he was never at fault. I loved Dan and will always remember and appreciate the things that he did for our family. I share your sorrow at his passing and hope that your happy memories of him will be a comfort to you at this time.

  • I worked with Dan for many years at Hanford. He was an excellent engineer and a joy to work with. He was respected by his peers and always provided me with accurate, information that I could rely on. My sympathy to Dan’s family. May God comfort you in this time of mourning and in the days ahead.

  • I will forever miss uncle Dan. I have MANY memories. One is when we were camping at hood park and it was raining quite hard. Uncle Dan put garbage bags over our heads with a hole cut out of course to use at rain coats and he took us to the ice harbor dam.

he also helped me with my chemistry homework and I would NEVER have passed that class without him. He was super patient with me too.

He rotated around at EVERY family gathering making it a point to visit with each and every person in attendance. That always made me feel so important and loved. He of course always had a joke to share and I always looked forward to that.

My only regret is not spending more time with him and not telling him how I feel. I will forever miss him and i still can’t believe he is gone.

    Love, Laura

  • I worked with Dan on Waste Tank 101-SY and I’ll quote Chuck Stewart from his book about that work.

“Dan Reynolds is the heart, soul, and conscience of the Hanford Tank farms. … He knows each tank …and speaks their language….Tall and taciturn, Dan is an authentic “graybeard” …. He is never arrogant,… because he knows the limitations of the tank data and appreciates the … complexity of … them. With his wisdom, Dan can respect others who understand things differently. … At meetings,Dan stays quiet most of the time. But after the youngsters have confused things sufficiently, Dan speaks! When Dan …ambles to the white board, listen carefully! He will give you good tank data,…… clearly laid out with simple logic, that answer the important question, even if it hasn’t been stated. It has been an honor and a privilege to work with Dan…”

I echo those sentiments. My heartfelt condolences to his family.

  • I was acquainted with Dan during my youth. I cherish many fond memories both from church lessons and scouts. All are intertwined with his imagination and humor. I still share several on occasion. My two favorite I’ll briefly share. From Church: Dan as part of a lesson tells us of the family heirloom he brought, passed down for generations, parts being replaced from time to time-David’s sling, now some shoelaces and a piece of leather. He drew Goliath on the chalkboard, head 10 times the rest of the body so he could hit it – with the sling and chalk. From Scouts: on a canoeing trip we tried to paddle across the river in time to catch another set of standing waves. Tipped the canoe and wrapped up on a rock, had to find a large fallen tree branch to pry it off and catch up with the rest of the troop. His story when we caught up included a water monster that lived beneath the waves and our valiant fight to vanquish the monster and retrieve the canoe. Many, many fond memories.
