MARCELLA JOHNSON 1915-2009
Marcella Johnson, 94, was called home by her Lord and Savior, Saturday, November 28th.
She was born to Leona & Joseph Blankenship on February 20, 1915 in Ramsey, IL; the third of eleven children.
She spent her early years in Nebraska, moving to Washington in 1941 with her husband Alden and daughters Ruth Ann "Terry" Bewlay and Norma Johnson. She moved to Richland in 2004.
She had 2 granddaughters, Kelly Mark Peterson and Jill Tony Ledford, 2 great granddaughters, Stephanie Robert Nielsen and Jennifer Peterson, and two great grandsons Joshua and Timothy Ledford.
She loved Jesus and was a member of Calvary Assembly of God in West Richland. She also loved flowers and gardening, especially roses. She was an avid reader. She was a talented seamstress and very creative with handiwork and various crafts. She and her husband had a fishing business in Westport for many years. Marcella loved to travel. She especially enjoyed Cannon Beach.
She is survived by her sisters Nelda Devoir and Vivian Leo Dormiaer, and brother Don Joanne Blankenship.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Alden, after 64 years of marriage, her daughter, Ruth Ann Bewlay, her parents, Joseph and Leona Blankenship and several siblings.
At her request there will be no service, but in the springtime, there will be a celebration of her life along the Columbia River.
Special thanks to The Chaplaincy Hospice who gave help at every hour of the day.
Memorial contributions may be made to Calvary Assembly of God, 1800 Bombing Range Road, West Richland 99353 or The Chaplaincy.
Her sense of humor and spunkiness will be deeply missed.
Norma – I have such great memories of your family. Marcella was like a second mom to me when we were in school. Westport & Klickitat fishing, Spokane to visit Don, Holden Village to visit Aunt Lou, Walla Walla for the pea harvest and your mom was always in the midst of it reminding me I wouldn’t find a husband if I didn’t quit chewing my fingernails. You have been a fabulous caregiver and I know that wasn’t always easy – treasure your memories as I do.
The world has lost a one-of-a kind character. There was never a dull moment when you were in the company of Marcella. I know she is happy to be in the arms of Jesus.
Norma would invite her hospital co-workers for dinner. Norma and Marcella would share their gifts of cooking with us. These were special times for all of us that attended. Marcella always made you feel so welcome and had plenty of stories to tell that made you laugh. She would share her latest crafts with us and we always felt the love in that house. Her memory will be with me forever. Philip will also greet Marcella upon her arrival in Gods hands.
Marcella was a joy to know. I was always amazed at her energy for her age, I kept asking her what her secret was… she never did tell me. I will miss our long chatty lunches together and all her great stories. I will also miss seeing her out in the yard tending to her flowers and how excited she was about a new rose bush. I’m sure she’s taking care of roses in Heaven now.
She was somethin’ else and I’m glad I got to know her.
I always looked forward to seeing her when I came up to Richland.
We have sorrow for losing a friend and joy that Marcella is in a better place.
We will miss Marcella when we come down for our visit next year. She always had great stories an loved to get on Gayle’s case.He loved that, also don’t forget the to-do list for him.
I have to say Marcella was certainly one of a kind, we enjoyed her…she will be directing people up there for sure…
