Richard Mack A. McDonnell Obituary
Beloved husband, brother, uncle, and friend, Richard "Mack" A. McDonnell died November 4, 2009.
Mack was born January 1, 1927 to parents Edward and Katharine McDermott McDonnell. The family moved to Richland in 1943. On graduation from Columbia High, Mack served in the Navy as a Medical Corpsman. When discharged, he later attended college at Farragut, Idaho. He returned to Richland where he and Jerry were married 1955. Eventually employed by General Electric, Mack worked in Richland, San Jose CA, and Wilmington, N.C. He retired in 1988 and moved back to Richland.
Mack loved to travel. He and his wife traveled to Australia, Antarctica, South America, Europe, China, Japan, and Alaska. He was also a consummate volunteer. He assisted the American Red Cross and the Richland Police VIP Program. He was a 4th Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus and a former Grand Knight, and had a special place in his heart for Tri Cities Prep High School. His many quiet acts of help and care for friends and strangers cannot be counted.
Mack was preceded in death by his parents, sister Katharine Little, and niece, Martha Sisk-Moro. He is survived by his wife Jerry, daughter Kathy, brother Michael McDonnell, sister Mary E. Sisk, seventeen nephews and nieces, twenty-eight grand nieces and nephews, six great-grand nieces and nephews and friends too numerous to list.
Viewing will be at Einan's Funeral Home on Sunday, November 8, 5-7 PM with rosary following. Funeral Mass: Christ the King Church, 10AM November 9. Lunch reception at the Richland Knights of Columbus Hall following internment.
I worked with Mack for several years in Wilmington, NC. I remember that he never ever missed a day of work. He was never late either. We shared many Richland stories while in NC and I am sad to learn of his passing.
Jerry – I was so sorry to hear of Mack’s recent health issues and his passing. May all of the good times you and Mac shared bring you comfort. He will leave a void in the Richland Rod and Gun Club. I will be not be able to celebrate funeral mass with you because I will be in Oregon. My Sympathy to you and your family. Marilyn
God bless and best wishes, Jerry! We will miss Mack and all that he brought to the Richland Rod and Gun Club and its members. He was one of a kind.
My condolences to the family. I so enjoyed Mac during our cribbage games; we could do a good job of setting up a “15-2”. I will always treasure the time Mac was asking the KCs at card table to work a R.C.Blood drive at KC hall; and he obligingly “allowed” this lone Protestant to help out, by manning the root beer float bar. Wiill miss ya, Buddy. Bob
I was working at the Richland Police Department as a clerk for the Detective Division when Mack was a volunteer there. He was such a pleasure to be around. Always had a smile and upbeat. He will be remembered and missed.
My thoughts and prayers are with the family.
Dear Mrs. McDonnell:
I am sorry to hear of Mack’s passing. I would have attended the services but I am hunting in Oregon. The Richland Rod and Gun Club and the Tri-City community has lost a wonderful gentleman who can not be replaced. You have my sympathy and I will say a prayer for Mack even if it is a few days late.
To Mack’s family; I was sorry to hear of his passing today as I had just recently had memories of him and wondered how he was doing. When I joined GE in Wilmington in 1970, he was one of the experienced men in our business and he taught me a lot. We enjoyed each other’s help on many problem-solving missions. He was missed when he left GE and is remembered by many, many associates. May our Lord’s peace and presence be with you.
Jerry: I was very sorry to hear about the death of Mack. I worked with him as a planner in FCO for 20 years and he was one of the finest men I have ever known. Bill Savage and I played many a trick on Mack but it was because we liked him so much and learned so much from him. I know he will be greatly missed, not only by you and his family, but by allwho knew him. God bless you and your family. Darrell McHaney
Dear Jerry,
I was saddened about the death of Mack. I know it is a tremendous shock to be without him. He was a vibrant man and was always upbeat. I guess this comes from being a stubborn Irishman. I will always remember our visit with you in Richland. I can’t remember the exact year but know it was in the 90’s. Thoughts and prayers are with you. Royce
Mrs McDonnell,Sorry For Your Loss Mack Was My Boss Shortly After I Went To GE,What Time I Had With Him He Was A Nice Man,GOD BLESS YOU AND KEEP YOU CLOSE JB.
Dear Mrs. McDonald and Family,
Please accept my condolences on Mack’s, passing. I became acquainted with Mack through the Richland Rod and Gun Club. He joined the Club in 1995, was elected to the Board of Trustees in 1999, 2000 and 2001 and was also a member of the Special Volunteers. He received the club’s Distinguished Service Award in 2003 and the Life Member Award in 2006. He was active in many Club activities, including habitat projects, Lunker Lake, Salmon Booth, Fishing Kids and Wild Game Dinner. For the last four years, he graciously provided freezer storage space for meat to be used in the Wild Game Dinner. His willingness to volunteer for club projects will always be remembered. He was a pleasure to work with and will be greatly missed by the club.
