Kenneth R. Heid was born July 7, 1924 in Yakima, WA. He attended high school in Zillah, WA and went on to Washington State University. Ken went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, December 26, 2009.
Ken enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force in 1943. Later that year he was transferred to the 89th Light Infantry Division of Patton's Third Army where he served for three years in the American, African, European, Mediteranean and Middle East Theatres of Operation. In 1946 he received an honorable discharge and several awards, including the Bronze Star.
Following his discharge from the army, Ken returned to Zillah where he met the love of his life, Mary Pauline Ratliff. They were married in 1948 and enjoyed more than sixty years together raising a family, traveling and gardening.
In 1947 Ken was hired by the General Electric Co. and worked as a Health Physicist at Hanford. He continued in that capacity for Battelle when they replaced G.E. At the time of his retirement in 1986, Ken was a Sr. Research Scientist in Health Physics. He played a major role in the design and development of both the Plutonium and Uranium Registries and had served as the initial Associate Director of both Registries.
Ken was an active member of the American Health Physics Society and served in a variety of positions, including Editor of the HPS Journal, which received world-wide distribution; Secretary; and Board Member of the HPS. In recognition of services rendered he was designated as an Honored Fellow of the Society.
Ken was also an active member of the Church of the Nazarene and served in several capacities. He especially enjoyed working with the teenagers of the church and was instrumental in organizing two Tri-City Basketball Leagues.
He was also active in his community serving on the West Richland City Council and on the Benton-Franklin Board of Health.
Ken was preceded in death by his father, George Heid, and his mother Gladys Heid, and two sisters, Alene May and Ludella Heid, all of Yakima, WA.
Survivors include two sisters, Mabel Metzer and Nancy Heid, both of Yakima, WA., and one brother, Floyd Heid of Zillah, WA. He is also survived by his wife, Mary Pauline Heid; two daughters, Judith Anne Elliott and Cheryl Lee McGee; five grandchildren, Todd, Kelly, Jessica, Ericca and Cory and two great-grandsons.
We will celebrate a life well-lived, on Saturday, January 2, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. at the Richland Church of the Nazarene on Jericho Rd. A private burial service will be held at Einans in Richland.
Ken was dearly loved by his family and will be greatly missed. We will hold him in our hearts forever.
Anyone wishing to make a donation in Ken's honor, is encouraged to give to the Tri-Cities Chaplaincy Hospice, 2108 W. Entiat Ave, Kennewick, WA 99336.
My wife and I were very sad to learn of the passing of Ken. I have known Ken and worked with him since 1955. He has accomplished so many important healh physics matters during his life that have benefited the profession. The radiation records program he developed and managed was the best in the country.
May Ken Rest In Peace
We were saddened to hear about Uncle Kenny. It seems like just yesterday when my Mom & I drove down to Richland so they could visit. I remember Judy joining us for lunch. Mom talked about that visit for quite some time. Wish we could have done it again. May God bless his family. Please know that the family is in our thoughts and prayers. May God Bless.
My prayers and love go to Aunt Pauline, Judy, Cherie and all the family. Although I rarely saw you all over the years, please know that I thought of you all with fondness and love in my heart and remembered the times I had spent with you as a child – sometimes at Grandma Heid’s home and once on the Oregon shore when Judy and I were small. I send God’s blessings to each of you. Uncle Ken was such a wonderful human being and I know he will be greatly missed. My own Dad has been gone five years and I miss him every single day. Love to you all!
I was so sorry to learn of Ken Heid passing. Ken and Polly were a big part of the frame work growing up in the Nazarene church. I have very fond memories of them and Judy and Todd and Kelly
Please accept my condolences – I shall remember your family at this time of loss. I worked for Ken as his secretary in the early 1980’s. He was a kind man and I enjoyed working with him very much. We have a shared faith in the Lord and it was a blessing to have him for a boss. I remember that he was featured once on the 700 Club! Ken is with the Lord now, rejoicing forever, what a comfort that is. Ken’s memorial was at the same time & day as my dear father-in-law. I know what a comfort it is to know that they are with the LORD. May all the memories give you joy to reflect upon. God bless you.
Dearest Polly and Family;
God bless all of you!
I had a brief but excellent memory of Ken. Without reservation, Ken always had a smile and a kind word. It was evident that Ken was a man of god. That’s one of the best testimonies a man in this life could have. How proud we all were of him. He will be missed.
May the Lord lift you up and give you His comfort continually through the days ahead.
Ken will always be remembered for the gracious kindness he shared with those around him. I have many happy memories of Ken.
