From Richland, WA, US | Born in Herrick, S.D.

Donald Louis ‘Don’ Rust

Donald L. Rust, 86, of Richland, Washington went home to our Lord on May 19, 2010. Born on March 1924, Don was the 7th of 11 children born to Henry and Lottie Rust.

Don lived his early life on a family farm in Herrick, South Dakota. The 1930's Dust Bowl and Great Depression made life difficult for the family and they moved to Selah, Washington to find work.

At 18, Don enlisted in the Navy, trained as a Medic during World War II where he served as a corpsman and supported the 3rd Marine Battalion, 9th Marine Infantry, 3rd Marine Division throughout the Pacific, most notably during the Battles of Guam and Iwo Jima.

After the war, he returned to Selah and found his soul mate Rosella Scott. After their marriage in April 1947 they moved to Richland, where Don worked as an ambulance driver for Kadlec Hospital, as a water treatment specialist and a power operator for the Hanford Site. He retired 40 years later in 1987 from Westinghouse.

Don was a member of the Leisure Club, HAMTC Operating Engineers Local No. 280 and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Don and Rose lovingly raised five children, were adoptive and foster parents and shared their home with countless family members and others throughout their lives. No one ever entered the warmth of their home without being touched by their generosity, or being offered food, a place to rest, and stories to entertain them.

Don always held God in his heart and was a life-long member of Christ the King Catholic Church. He was a strong, good and humble man who always provided for his family as he guided them with love.

Don's memory of people and events stayed with him throughout his life as he shared stories of his childhood, youth, and service as a Corpsman with family and friends. His stories were always entertaining. During the last months of Don's life, as family and friends came to visit, he shared special memories with them about their parents or about them when they were children as his parting gift to them. He never lost his wonderful sense of humor and love of people.

Don and his memories are forever in the hearts of his family, which includes his Daughters Pam spouse Bill Hames, Renae Rust; Sons Rod spouse Lilia Rust, Ted Rust partner Mark, and Bill spouse Tanya Rust; Sisters Lenora Thomas, Alice spouse Bob Frister and Mary St George; 13 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren; his large extended family; friends and those he shared & played BINGO with at Knights of Columbus and West Richland Senior Center. He will be dearly missed by all.

Don was welcomed to Heaven by his lovely wife of 56 years, Rose, parents Henry and Lottie Rust, brothers Bill, Charlie, Vic, Hank and Joe Rust; sisters Lauren Colgan and Laura Roy and many family members and friends.

Don's family wishes to thank the Tri-Cities Chaplaincy Hospice for the loving care they provided to our father, and all others who provided the support we have cherished in our time of need.

Donations in memory of Don can be sent to the Catholic Family and Child Services of the Diocese of Yakima www.ccyakima.org/family/yakima/donate.html

The celebration of Don's life will include a viewing Thursday May 27th from 12-6 pm and Rosary at 7 pm at Einan's Funeral Home 915 By Pass Highway, Richland.

The funeral will be at 1pm on Friday May 28th at Christ the King Church 1111 Stevens Drive, Richland, followed by graveside services at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Following the services the family invites all guests to join them at Memories Sunset Event Center for a celebration of Don's life

  • Uncle Don, Aunt Rose and their family were a big part of my growing up years. I have fond memories of vacations, get togethers, family reunions, weekend outings, and short visits with all of them.

I rejoice that Uncle Don and Aunt Rose are together again, this time for eternity. I eagerly await to see them and the other family members again in the presence of our Lord and Savior.

May God comfort all of the family and loved ones of Uncle Don and Aunt rose for this loss, but at the same time, renew the faith that we will be together again!!!

The gift that Jesus has given has now been fulfilled for them.

    HALLELUJIA!!!

  • Was so great to spend some time with him and have Spudnuts. Could have said so much more, but didn’t really have to say anything, cuz Uncle Don knew.

Our arms are holding you tight in this hard time and will be for a long time. You took such good care of your dad and Grandpa. Love to all of you….

He’s catching lots of fish where he is–I know this because Jim and his buddies caught a whole sleu of salmon the other night and it just dawned on me how!!

  • Dear Cousins,

Your dad was such a good guy with a heart of gold. Even though we’re on the other side of the mountains I still feel very close to my relatives. Uncle Don had that special, gentle kindness that all of my aunts and uncles shared. Mom was telling me what great brother he was to her and she was glad to have talked to him last month to tell him so. The whole Thomas family sends their love and prayers.God Bless.

    Love, Cousin Gayle

  • We loved Uncle Don so much. He was a true Gentleman in the very best sense of the word. He was a special mentor to Tom and we are forever grateful for all he taught him. He was so sweet to Mary, as a child and in her adulthood. Loving memories of Don and Rose visiting us in Yakima when our family was struggling to grow up. What a Godsend. His goodness will always be with us. Thank you Uncle Don!

  • Billie and I would like everyone to know that our prayers are with all of you who are family and friends of Don.

Don was a great man and the toughest son-of-a-bitch I have ever met. A true American Hero. He was the kindest and most generous person who would welcome a stranger into his home.

Don was the only man that I know who jumped out of a window at 75 to save his family from a burning house and quit smoking at 81. If I grow up to be half the man Don was I will be lucky and proud.

I know Don is in a better place now and I finally have someone to pray to that can start getting things done up there. : I love you all.

    Zak and Billie.

  • Uncle Don was such a kind and happy man, and I’m glad he touched my life. I will always remember him taking me out for my first banana split on my 13th birthday. Along with Aunt Rose, his gift of hospitality was complete and genuine. He is well loved and will be missed. May God be with all of you, Pam, Rod, Ted, Renae, Bill, and all the family during this hard time.

  • I was so lucky to have moved back to Richland during my sophmore and junior year of highschool. If I hadn’t, I would have missed out on many special times and memories of hanging out at Uncle Don’s. My heart goes out to those closest to him. He will truly be missed.
