Mary Sophia Panesko
Mary S. Panesko passed away on June 7, 2010 at the Life Care Center in Richland, WA. Mary was born in Chehalis, Washington in 1942 and was raised on the family farm near Winlock, spending her last two years of high school at St. Mary's Academy in Toledo, Washington where she forged lifelong friendships.
She attended Seattle Business College and worked for Dunn & Bradstreet, Boeing and the City of Seattle. She married Vince Panesko from Chehalis in 1962. In 1963 they moved to Pasco where Mary attended Columbia Basin Community College, focusing on art and drama.
In 1965 they moved to Richland where Mary raised 3 children, John Paul, Liana and Joe. Mary supported her children in school activities, car restorations, music lessons, table tennis tournaments, cub scouts and boy scouts.
Mary was known for her love of art, gardening and birding. She played piano and also loved to bake, using the fruit from her yard. Mary loved to send letters and cards to her friends and family. She was active in prayer groups and prayer chains at Christ the King Catholic Church. She was always helping those in need, especially elderly widows with their daily chores. Mary was known for her kindness, gentle touch and a big smile. She also enjoyed collecting dog figurines and was always sporting a fancy hat!
Mary is survived by her husband Vince of Richland, sister Helen Perry Johnson of NJ; children John Paul Becky of Redmond, WA, Liana Marc Wunderlich of Kirkland, WA, and Joe Ann of Lacey, WA, and seven grandchildren.
A rosary will be held at Christ the King Catholic Church at 7pm on Friday, June 18. A memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, June 19th at 11 am at Christ the King Catholic Church in Richland with a lunch reception to follow immediately in the school cafeteria.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Seminarian Fund at Christ the King Catholic Church, 1111 Stevens Drive, Richland, 99354.
Vince and family,
Sincere condolences for your loss and may your memories bring you some level of comfort.
Sincerely,
Susan Leckband
I remember Mary from my Jr. High days as a friend of JP’s. We were active in scouts and church and Mary was there through all our activities, from playing cards together, to parties, to seeing her at mass.
Our condolences go out to the Panesko family and we wish them peace as they work through this time. She will be sorely missed and well remembered.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the Panesko family, and especially my friend John Paul and his family at this time. Your mother was a lovely lady. The Christ the King community will miss her!

Dear Vince, John Paul, Lianna and Joe I’m so sorry for the pain you’re feeling over Mary’s passing. You will all be in my prayers for your continued healing. She was truly a very dear person. She and I kept in touch for over 34 years after my family and I left Richland. I will miss her. Diane Maes and family – Ray, Wendy, Kevin and Margo
Vince, JP, Liana and Joe:
I was saddened to hear the news from Liana. May the remembrance of Mary/your Mom soon bring smiles from cherished memories instead of sadness from your loss.
My thoughts are with all of you.
