Grethe Isabella Shipp

Grethe Isabella Petersen was born January 27, 1915, in Deseret, Utah, the fifth of ten children of Nels L. and Edith Petersen.

She grew up in the small town of Hinckley, Utah, and graduated from Hinckley High School. She attended Brigham Young University, where she studied business. She worked as a bookkeeper in Provo, Utah, for several years.

She married J. Steele Shipp on December 20, 1939, in Hinckley, Utah.

Grethe was a long-time member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers and was a member of the Shoreline ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served in several Church positions, most notably as secretary of the Relief Society for many years.

Mrs. Shipp loved gardening and was known for her beautiful roses. She also kept an immaculate house, and enjoyed traveling all over the world. Her greatest love was for her family.

She is survived by her daughter Kathleen Tom Davies of Qualicum Beach, B.C.; son Robert Susie Shipp of Richland; daughter Deborah Keith Rhoades of Omaha, NE; grandchildren Brian France White of Zurich, Switzerland; Christina Craig Miller of Richmond, CA; Daniel Lkhamaa Shipp of Orem, UT; Kenji Rachel Shipp of West Jordan, UT; Karyn Medina of Seattle; Alyssa Scott Stenson of Lincoln, NE; David Amy Rhoades of O’Fallon, MO; Rebecca Mark Chadwell and Robbyn Rhoades of Omaha, NE; brother Ward Petersen of Hinckley, UT; sisters Margaret Jensen of Salt Lake City, UT, and Barbra Ashby of Delta, UT; and fourteen great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Steele; her parents; her brothers, Lowell, Wayne and Homer Petersen; and her sisters, Nelda Memmott, Beulah Bassett, and Dorathy Damron.

Grethe was greatly loved and will be greatly missed. Funeral services will be held in the Jadwin chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 2:00 p. m. on Monday, September 20, 2010. Interment will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, friends who so desire may make donations in her memory to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, or to the Humanitarian Aid or Perpetual Education fund of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

  • I love my Aunt Grethe so much! What a great lady! I loved for the Shipps to come visit us in Utah. It was so much fun to have my cute, fun, singing cousins come. Aunt Grethe was always smiling and happy and she always made me feel like she loved me more than anyone. It is a talent that the Petersen women had.Kathy, Rob and Debbie, please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. You are all a tribute to your mom and dad. I am sure that Aunt Grethe is happy to be reunited with Uncle Steele, Grandpa and Grandma and those other wonderful Petersen Aunts and Uncles. I miss them all and I know that my mom misses them all so much! Thanks for being great examples and for being so kind to me and my family. I love you all! I only wish we could have been together more often. Please come see us!

  • When I was home for the R2K+10 high school reunion in June, I visited with Grethe and Corrine Armstrong in Grethe’s backyard, as I usually do when I return to Richland for a class reunion. We had a pleasant, fun conversation, and I would never have guessed that Grethe was 95 years old. Grethe was a lovely lady. May fond memories comfort the family at this sad time . . . .

  • Aunt Grethe always impressed me with her energy, joy of life and pride in her family. I enjoyed watching her face when Uncle Steele and/or Debbie and Rob would perform for us as she always looked so pleased. As with all of my Uncles and Aunts who have gone before, I will miss her greatly.
