Doris E. Ostby Lange

Doris Edeline Ostby Lange, 94, charter member of Richland Lutheran Church, died at home October 24, 2010. She was surrounded by her family who loved her deeply. Her goal was to live until she was 92 years, the same age as her parents. She was the last survivor of nine children born to Sophie and John Ostby.

Doris was born on October 8, 1916, in Winger, Minnesota. As a young child she moved to Granite Falls, Minnesota. She attended Balzer Business College. Following college she worked at Cudahy Meat Packing Company as a bookkeeper. She married her lifelong dancing and bridge partner, Clarence Lange, on September 11, 1938. She and her husband moved to Richland, WA, in 1944. He preceded her in death in 1995.

She is survived by her four children, Gary Lange Sandee Sequim, Washington, Jill Peterson, St. Paul, Minnesota, Dawn Blankingship Charlie, Kennewick, Washington, and Jack Lange Mary, Sequim, Washington. She is also survived by 7 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, her sister-in-law Shirley Ostby-Nelson, Frosti Lange, many nieces, nephews, and wonderful friends.

Doris was known for her hospitality and loved to entertain. She enjoyed baking desserts almost as much as she enjoyed eating them. In her later years she always believed in dessert first! She appreciated a good bridge game, loved to dance, and watched Lawrence Welk every Saturday night. She and her husband spent countless hours fishing for bass and silvers on Lake Chatcolet in Idaho and traveling internationally.

Doris will be remembered for her strong Christian values, her thoughtful and gracious ways, her kind heart, and her deep love for family and friends. She loved to laugh and people often walked away with a smile.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 30, at Richland Lutheran Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Richland Lutheran Church Good News Ministries, Richland Lutheran Foundation, 901 Van Giesen, Richland, WA 99354 or Hospice at the Chaplaincy, 2108 Entiat, Kennewick, WA 99336.

  • I am glad to have met Doris. She was a lovely lady and even at the end of her days she had a happy thought and a smile to share. People like her inspire me to be a better nurse. She will be missed.

  • To all of Doris’ family and much-loved friends: For reasons I didn’t know, Doris had been on my heart a lot during the last couple of weeks of October. I just discovered this morning 11/4 of her passing. Now I understand why my heart had been moved to pray for her! I knew Doris literally for my entire life, through Richland Lutheran. She truly LIVED the gift of life God gave her. I can hear her voice & laughter even now. I am sad for your pain, but so glad she is re-joined with Clarence & so many others, & with our Father in Heaven. We shall gather again! Blessings of peace & comfort to all who are missing her here on earth. God be with you.

  • Jill and Family,

So sorry for your loss. I lost my mom last November. There is a void that can never be filled. Your mom was a very giving person and a beautiful lady. Not many mothers would have the whole 6th grade class of girls over for a slumber party. Wonderful memories.

    Your Sacajawea buddy,

  • Dear Lange Families: My sincere condolences to all of you on the loss of your Mom. What a treasure. I had not seen her since we moved from the ‘B’ house on Mahan in the spring of 1958 until the All Class Richland Reunion R2K in late June of 2000. You were so fortunate to have her with you for so very long! She was certainly a blessing to those who knew her.

  • My thoughts and prayers are with all of the Lange family. I want to thank you all for sharing your lovely, sweet and precious MaMa with me. I truly adored Doris and always felt such joy whenever I was around her. She will be missed so much! Most of all I will miss her chuckles as she would lift her head, her eyes would light up and she would chuckle only like Doris could.

    One more thought, Baked Alaska!

  • We have loved being Doris’ neighbor for the last 8 years. She has been a source of joy and entertainment. Dan and I were fortunate enough to enjoy some of her special desserts including the best Baked Alaska ever and shared much laughter with her. Without an exception, I always left with a smile after a visit with Doris. She did a great job raising her children, all of whom are accomplished, kind and generous individuals. Our thoughts and prayers are with her exceptional family.
