Beverly June Johnson
Beverly Johnson, amazing Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother passed away quietly in her sleep Sunday, June 5, 2011. Born on January 28, 1920 in Chicago, Illinois, Beverly was raised in Racine, Wisconsin. After graduating from Washington Park High School, she went on to train as a Registered Nurse at St. Luke's Hospital in her home town.
Beverly met Julius Johnson by chance at the Union Railroad Station in Chicago and after a brief courtship they married at his family home on Diamond Lake in Cable, Wisconsin on July 10, 1943. Soon after they began their adventure out West and became original residents of Richland. After only 24 years of marriage, her husband Julius died in 1967. She learned how to drive, took over the finances and raised her children alone becoming the center of the universe for her family.
Beverly was most proud of and will be remembered for her many years as an obstetrics nurse at Kadlec Hospital. She was widely known as a gifted story teller, wonderful letter writer and her "little gray house in the West" was always the neighborhood gathering place.
She is survived by her four children, Kurt Johnson Sherri, Deirdre Johnson, Charles Johnson Tammara Megan Cartmell Dick, ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She was a long-time member of Southside Church and Eastern Star. Beverly was a much adored mother and will be deeply missed. We admired her so. Memorial services will be held at Southside Church, 517 Jadwin, in Richland at 3:00 pm on Friday, June 10, 2011. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Southside Church.
We so enjoyed receiving her letters

My sincere condolences to you. Bev was my mother’s best friend, and I truly enjoyed our visits each time I came to Richland for reunions. She always welcomed me with open arms. Her memory about early Richland was uncanny. And her stories—always enjoyable and funny. She left in all of you an GRAND legacy. God Bless you Bev, and your loving family.
Bev was my Mother’s RIP dearest friend… Johnson’s lived across the street from Smyths on Symons – in the EARLY days of Richland. I always stopped by to visit with Bev whenever I was in Richland. My Mom was there to greet her when she arrived… may she rest in peace.
Dear Family, What a lovely lady your mom was. Our family knew your parents since they moved into their “H” house.
Mom, Verna Hutchins, was also an RN. So our moms shared the “same language”. Our family attended Southside UPC our first few years and then CUP. Dad was Assistant Post Master from 1944-1958.
Many fond memories of your mom through the hospital, Eastern Star and “southside”. We lived on Benham.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. May the love of God continue to go with you during these days and that wonderful memories of you mom will help each day. Our Sincere Sympathy, Pastor Carl and Ruthann Hutchins Jensen.
Dear Beverly’s Family,
My deepest sympathy for your loss. I remember your mother as a long-time family friend to my parents Harry & Maitland. Bev was a soft spoken, kind and gentle soul who loved her children and family very much. She will be missed. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
We were blessed to have known Bev for over 60 years. She was a very special spirit and someone we always looked forward to seeing. I think she is the last of the Southside originals, but she will always have a place in our hearts.
your mother was a great lady and a wonderful nurse. she delivered our second son as dr chase didn’t get to the delivery room until after he was born. she loved her profession and that was very apparent. she was also a neighbor. she had a very full and rewarding life.

Tim Smyth checking in from New York. Bev and all the Johnsons were such great friends of the Smyth family, especially my Mom. My sincere condolences to all the Johnson family. This winter I was able to make it my parent’s gravesite in Virginia. They’ve been gone since and 1974 and 1981 respectively, way too early. I plan on coming to Richland next year for my 50th class reunion. Perhaps I can check in with some of you guys. My email is ikabod37@roadrunner.com

I have wonderful memories of my Aunt Bev! My condolences to her family. She was a wonderful person.
I’ve known Bev for more than 60 years and it has been a fortune to have known her and been able to call her a very close friend. For Nancy and I to have her bring out our first born and call him “Gall Bladder” Ballard was and always has been a great thing. She was always a person we could always count on to remember birthdays. She will be very much missed in our home. To “ALL” her family we are sorry for your loss, she was one great “LADY”. We shall all miss her very much. Roy and Nancy
I remember flying to Washington to visist my Great Aunt Beverly and meeting her Megan and her boys when they were little. I loved to listen to her stories and remember writing letters back and forth when I was a kid. I always looked forward to flying to Washington to see her. The last time I saw Aunt Beverly I was pregnant with my youngest daughter Mikayla. I will miss her our deepest sympathy. Jamie, Kathrin, Mackenzie, and Mikayla Bowe.
Dear Johnson Family,
The words of remembrance were beautiful.
Over the past few years your mothers’ reflections and stories, of she and motherAnnabelle, brought sunshine and laughter to my life!
~ Beverly was a gift from Heaven ~
~ ThankYou Beverly for being ‘you’~
Bev was a great lady, and I have the fondest memories of her – a classic beauty – her beautiful hair – her kindness as a nurse when I gave birth 40 years ago – sitting in her living room visiting several years ago. She raised great kids, too. My thoughts are with you all.
My Great Aunt Bev and I took a walking trip in West Racine when I was about 8-9 years old. The stories that she knew! She bought me a small tin as a momento, which I have to this day. She was a wonderful woman and she will be dearly missed by her Wisconsin family.
