  • I met Tony in 1989 when I visited the Pacific Northwest Laboratory, and 2 years later began a decade as an back-fence neighbor to the James family and their perennial guests, the Birchall family. My experience of Tony was of a vital, enthusiastic, and positive man who was amazingly knowledgeable about aerosol science and internal dosimetry. He always seemed to know the answers or know where to find them, and he unselfishly gave of his time and energy. He was a wonderful mentor and teacher. I recall organizing an 8-hour class on internal dosimetry in 2004 with Tony and Alan Birchall, and was honored when they actually let me teach a small part of it! I enjoyed the generous and gracious hospitality that Tony and Jan offered on many occasions. Tony was a good friend and dear colleague. He is and will be greatly missed.

  • I met Tony through my membership on the Science Advisory Committee of the U.S. Transuranium and Uranium Registries USTUR. Tony was a delight to be around. He had infectious energy, and the USTUR will miss his vision and leadership. We on the committee will miss his hospitality, his brilliant sense of humor, his knowledge, and his willingness to listen. I extend my heartfelt sympathy to the family of a wonderful man.

  • Tony started at USTUR shortly before I became Dean at WSU. It was a true pleasure to work with someone so dedicated to doing things right – and to getting things done. His support for the College of Pharmacy was fantastic. And his willingness to work to advance radiation biology was legendary. He will be missed.

  • I am grateful to work closely with Tony for last three years when I became the USTUR Program Manager at the U.S. Department of Energy. My feel of his energy, dedication and inspiration was instant. Tony greatly enhanced the USTUR as a national and international resource for testing and improving the application of excreta monitoring and other contemporary bioassay data to predict tissue dose rates measured at autopsy. He had so much to offer and what a loss for the USTUR!
