Daniel Earl Isaacs

Kenai resident Daniel Earl Isaacs 90, Born December 24th 1921 died December 13th 2011 at home with his son and daughter-in-law in the loving care of his family where he had resided for the past year.

Services will be held on December 29th viewing 1pm and graveside services 2pm at Einan's Funeral Home 915 By-Pass Highway in Richland Washington. Military Honors were performed by V.F.W. Post No 10046 and American Legion Post No. 20. on December 20th in Kenai Alaska.

Mr. Issacs was born Dec 24th 1921 in Perkins Oklahoma. He joined the United States Armed Forces on January 11th 1944 and served until April 19th 1946 He was designated Sharpshooter Rifle on March 26th 1944 and assigned to the 281st Combat Engineers Group. His service to his country included a tour of duty during World War 2 where he served under General George S. Patton in the U.S. Third Army to liberate Europe. The third Army went operational at Normandy August 1st 1944 and was in continuous combat for 281 straight days until May 9th of 1945 Mr. Isaacs saw service at Normandy, Lorraine, the Ardennes, Rhineland, and the battle of the Bulge. He once told the story of how they were in the hedgerows fighting to gain ground and blowing up land mines when the last thing he remembered was a big " bang " Dan said that he "woke up in a hospital in Paris three weeks later and the war was over." For his service to his country Dan was honorably discharged having won many medals and ribbons, including the world War 2 Victory Ribbon, Good Conduct Ribbon, Base Theater Ribbon, Purple Heart and three Bronze Service Stars. He separated from Service April 19th 1946 with the rank of Tech 5.

Before leaving for Europe, Dan met and married his wife Thelma whom he was with for over 62 years. After returning home they lived a long period of time in Richland Washington and raised two children. He was employed with General Electric at the Hanford Nuclear facility as an expert Journeyman welder.

Dan and Thelma moved to Kenai in 1967. He was employed through his Pipe Trades Local Union #367 at the beginning of construction of the Collier Carbon and Chemical plant, Unocal/ Agrium.

He also participated in the construction of the Tesoro Refinery and the Trans Alaska Pipeline, Prudhoe Bay facilities and many other major projects in Alaska.

Dan has lived in Alaska since that time, both in Anchorage and the last 8 years in Kenai AK. Dan was an avid hunter, fisherman, gun dealer and collector, and sports enthusiast. He loved watching Baseball with the Oilers and followed major league football every season. He participated to the fullest in fishing and hunting for most of his life. Dan often fished Cooper Landing and the Russian River in the years before "Combat Fishing". He was involved in the commercial fishing business in the late 70's and early 80's and had several set net sights on Chisik Island across Cook Inlet. In later years Dan loved spending his summers fishing in both Deep Creek and Ninilchick. Dan made sure that all of us including the children and grand children knew how to catch and preserve our fish and game. Dan used his skills as a welder to build many boats used in the local fisheries and was also a master knife maker. Many of his pieces were entered in recognized knife shows both here and in the lower 48.

Dan was preceded in death by his wife Thelma who passed 8 years ago, Daughter Sandra K. Brothers Bruce and Norris, and Sister Loree. He is survived by his Sisters Avis Richter of Grand Junction Colorado and Genevieve Prinster of Oregon, Daughter Sharon L. and Spouse John J. Williams, Son Ronald D. and spouse Deniece Isaacs, 7 grand children, Donna Williams, Deborah Williams Harris, Kippy Williams, Mena and John M. Williams, Lynsey, Shawn and Danyel Isaacs and 8 great grand children, Duncan and Derrek Harris, Marcus and Morgan Mena, Smantha Webber, Tyler, Kelsey, and Ryan Williams all of Kenai.
