Carl C Schock

Carl C. Schock passed away on July 4, 2012. He was 89 years old. Carl was born in Greenway, South Dakota, on October 4, 1922, to Karl and Dorothea Schock. In 1941, Carl graduated from Eureka High School and worked for the Red Owl grocery store. In 1943, he came to work at Hanford, where he spent the rest of his working career. During his 45 years at Hanford, Carl worked for Dupont, General Electric, and several other contractors including United Nuclear.

The most important event of Carl's life occurred on February 24, 1946, when he married the love of his life, best friend, and high school sweetheart, Lena Werre. She was a fabulous cook, and they truly lived happily ever after in the house he built.

Carl was a tremendously hard worker, practical, clean cut, and organized self-made man. He was very social, and made a friend everywhere he went. He and his wife were committed members of Richland Lutheran Church, where he spent many years on the Board of the Lutheran Senior Center, and was an usher at church funerals. He was also involved in various organizations; for example, the Rambling Rovers Senior Travel Club, and The Elks Lodge in his early years where he bore the position of "Exalted Ruler". One of Carl's favorite places to be was with his weekly "breakfast bunch group" where he could "shoot the breeze". After retirement, Carl and Lena spent many years "snow birding" in Arizona and traveling. They visited such places as Alaska, Hawaii, New Zealand, Australia, Europe and the Scandinavian Countries.

Carl and Lena had one son, Mark, who died at birth. Carl was preceded in death by his wife Lena, son Mark, his parents Karl and Dorothea Schock, his brothers; Oliver and Harvey Schock, and a sister Olivia Schock. He is survived by his sister Ramona Dickhaut and sister-in-law Verna Schock, several of Lena's siblings; Gertrude Krein husband-Earl, Verna Wisehart, Alfred Werre wife-Norma and Wilbert Werre wife-Ann, as well as, by twelve nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held at Richland Lutheran Church, 901 Van Giesen, Richland, WA, on Saturday, July 14 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, a donation for a memorial can be made to Richland Lutheran Church.

  • Carl and my Dad, Clarence were cousins. My wife Karol and I lived in Kennewick for about a year around 1973. We spent many fun times at Carl & Lena’s beautiful home. They joined the Strobel family each year for our 4th of July get togethers. We have many fond memories to cherish.

  • My husband, Rick, and I always enjoyed our good breakfast times after church with Carl and Lena when we were in town visiting mom and Dad. My mom and dad, Bud and Bernice Jensen, were very good friends of Carl and Lena and loved traveling with them and working at church together.

My mom, Bernice, sends her condolences and says they were great friends and will be missed.
