Joan Fae Greiter Canfield 11/20/34 – 10/8/12

Joan Fae Canfield, 77, lost her battle with cancer on October 8, 2012. Her final days were spent at her home surrounded by family and friends. Joan's positive attitude and zest for life warmed the hearts of everyone who knew her. Joan was born November 20, 1934 in Chehalis, WA to Gregory & Bertha Greiter. She spent 20 years working in the photography department for Battelle Northwest. After retirement, she volunteered daily at Gateway School for Young Children, where she loved being affectionately called "Grandma Joanie" by the hundreds of preschoolers whose lives she touched over the years.

Joan is survived by her two daughters Patty Marcum and Karen Richardson, son-in-law John Richardson all of Richland, her twin sister Jean White of Kennewick, and her sister-in-law Patty Greiter of Morton, WA. She was a loving grandmother to her five grandchildren and their spouses – Sott& Tori Marcum of Bellevue, Craig & Nikki Marcum of Richland, Grant and Jayme Richardson of West Richland, Maggie & Jayson Miller of Richland, and Zachary Richardson of Seattle. She also is survived by her Great-Grandchildren – Liam & Audrey Marcum, Ty and Landon Marcum, and Annelise Richardson. She was preceded in death by her brother Gilbert Greiter of Morton, WA, and brother-in-law Jack White of Kennewick.

There will be an Open House from 1:00 to 3:00pm this Sunday, October 14th at 510 Player Ct. in Richland.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Kim Moran and the wonderful nurses from Professional Case Management who provided not only top-notch medical care, but also amazing friendship to Joan. To Dr. William Kalichman and Sharon Harkness of Internal Medicine Associates of Richland, your personal commitment to Joan's care exceeded all of our expectations. And to Rachel Forester, our favorite pharmacist at Walgreens, your extended care to Joan was also extremely appreciated. Joan carried all of you in her heart.

  • It was a joy to share life with Joanie and her family for several months during the first half of 2011. She was a delight and a blessing – and I often felt that although I was there caring for her, in many ways she was caring for me as well! I treasure the memories of getting so excited with her as she introduced me to “Extreme Couponing” on TV. We would laugh and talk and just “be” together for hours on end … and I never had a moment of boredom or agitation when I was in her presence. Her spirit was and is! such a shining light. Thank you for letting me be a part of your family for those months. My prayers are with all of you.
