Our beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and aunt, Georgiana "Ruth" Hammer, passed away on November 5, 2012 at her home in Richland Washington. She was born on March 8, 1826, in Ozark, Michigan, to George and Anna Rapson. She was the ninth of ten children. Ruth graduated from Rudyard High School and received training as a LPN and married Louis E Hammer on May 29, 1948 on her father's farm near Trout Lake, Michigan. Their two children John and Linda were born while Louis was in the Coast Guard, John in Travers City, Mi. and Linda in Elizabeth City, NC. The family moved to Washington when Louis was transfer to the Port Angeles Coast Guard Station. In 1952 the family moved to the Prosser – Grandview area and then in the spring of 1956 the family moved to a 191 acre farm six miles west of the Richland Y. Ruth and Louis sold the farm in 1972 and moved into Richland.
Ruth was the perfect example to service. She was actively involved in the DAVA where she accumulated thousands of hours of service to veterans and their families. She was active in Eastern Star, Amaranth, Daughters of the Nile, White Shrine and Rainbow. Ruth loved everyone especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The world is a better place because of people like Ruth. She touched the lives of several people during her life and will surely be missed by her many friends… but is now in Heaven with her friends that have gone before her.
Ruth will be greatly missed by all OES Chapters in the area. She was always ready and willing to help others.
Ruth was one of the most caring and thoughtful people that I know and she will be missed by so many. Words cannot express how sorry I am to hear of her death. I pray that family and friends can find comfort in knowing that Ruth is with her Lord and Savior. Love and God’s Blessings.
Ruth was concidered as my second mom and her and my real mother Lucille Mattocks were friends in most of the organizations up to the time my mother passed 15 yrs ago and we are going to miss her and everything see did with the DAVA and as a volunteer at the Va Hospital and clinic. “We Love You Mom Hammer”
Mrs. Hammer raised the most awesome daughter, LINDA, who was my daughter Cathie’s best friend. My husband and I were lucky enough to have Linda as a second daughter. Linda we love you always.
Ruth was a wonderful woman and an OES mentor to me. She was Co-chairman of the Deputy Instructors in 1985/86 and I was one of her Deputies. She was always so glad to see you and she greeted everyone with a hug and her wonderful smile. I will miss her very much.
Ruth was very special to us. She was a dear Sister and was Nick’s VA “Mom”. I will never forget her smile. It will stay with me and bolster me when I think of her.
Ruthie was a person that gave freely to those in need. She will be greatly missed by all. Be at peace and thank you for being a good friend.
