LaMar Richard Stoops

LaMar Stoops, 62, died Saturday, December 22, 2012, at his home in Pasco, after battling advanced colon cancer 4 ½ years. LaMar held a constant faith through the years, believing and trusting in a loving and compassionate God. He is now enjoying the hope he held and looked forward to.

He was born in Seattle, 1950, the first child of Don and Delores Stoops and spent his early years in California, Thetis Island Canada, and Hoquiam, WA. In 1962 his family moved to Ephrata, WA, where he graduated from high school in 1968. His young adult years were filled with college, indulging in his passion for building mini-Indy race cars, and working in a number of motorcycle shops in eastern Washington.

In 1976, he married Barbara Gregg, the girl from back home. They lived in Sunnyside and Pullman where in 1982 LaMar completed his BS degree at WSU in civil engineering. They then moved and settled in Richland where they raised their children, Ken, Michael, and Melinda.

LaMar worked for Battelle as a software scientist where he was respected for his abilities and loved for being the kind and gentle man that he was. His career was cut short with the diagnosis of cancer. While battling cancer became his full time occupation, life continued to be filled with joy and meaningful time with his family and friends. He moved to a new home in west Pasco where he had a big workshop and enjoyed his hobby of woodworking.

Barbara and the family want to thank Dr. Rado and staff at CBHO for their skillful and caring guidance through the cancer journey.

LaMar attended Bethel Church where a memorial service will be held at a later date.

He is survived by his wife Barbara, sons Ken Kristy, and Michael, all of Pasco, and daughter Melinda Justin of Portland, OR.

  • The obituary account for LaMar reflects the way we remember him: Gentle and Joyful. When we talked to him last at our 50th anniversary celebration in Quincy, he surely reflected that Joy, and his gentle nature is something we have always noticed about him. We know that his life was is a glorious testimony to the Lord.

  • LaMar was a very special friend and prayer partner through some difficult times. He always had a positive testimony and outlook, which was instructional to me, since I don’t tend to be nearly so positive. We shared our lives and learned from each other how to be better fathers and husbands. LaMar always had his children at the top of his prayer list and we prayed for wisdom in how to best be the father that our Heavenly Father wanted us to be. I certainly am missing him and the positive influence he has been on my life.

  • I have truly missed my lunchtime conversations and prayers with LaMar. I loved his quiet confidence, always depending on and giving praise to our Lord Jesus, and always offering such wonderful insights and prayers no matter what the situation. He definitely knew where his hope and his joy were. My heart is very heavy right now but I know LaMar is at perfect peace and his strong faith is now made complete as he sees his Lord face to face. My prayers go out for Barbara and the family.

  • Rick and I first met Lamar and Barb when we were attending the CMA church in Richland. We helped them move when Ken was just a little guy, and we have been friends ever since. Even when we began attending different churches, our lives kept intersecting. Once we ran into them on a street in down town Victoria B.C. Most recently we bumped into Barb and Lamar at Yokes. We had a brief but never to be forgotten conversation where Lamar assured us that he was just getting to Heaven a bit sooner than the rest of us. Lamar, we DO KNOW for a fact that we will be bumping into you again, only this time it will be on a street in Heaven. See you soon!

  • I worked with LaMar for many years. Professionally, he was our ‘go to’ guy when we discovered a technical programming issue that needed in depth knowledge or research. I always tried to include him on my projects because his keen eye, clever mind, and calming influence seemed to make each project go a little bit smoother. Personally, I got to know LaMar because our daughters both did gymnastics. I always appreciated his kind spirit and willingness to donate his time and expertise to help and support others. Your family are in our prayers.
