Alden William "Shorty" Holloway, 87, died peacefully surrounded by family at Kadlec Medical Center on January 1, 2013. He was born on January 26, 1925 in Moko, Arkansas.
He started his music career at age 5 sitting on the counter of the country store singing a song and sang base vocals at church. Shorty lived in the Tri-Cities for 69 years. He worked on the Hanford Nuclear Reservation as a teamster driver and on the Alaska pipeline. He became a professional musician who entertained thousands throughout the country with his live performances, records, CDs, and television appearances. Some of the artists he performed with were Little Jimmy Dickens, Porter Wagner, and others. Shorty was an accomplished musician who played the guitar, violin, mandolin, banjo, and steel guitar.
Shorty not only loved his music but also his family. Many summers were spent fishing at the lake house he and Polly built. He also traveled to Puerto Rico, Fiji, Australia, Alaska, and a Caribbean cruise for their 50th wedding anniversary.
Shorty is survived by his wife of 68 years, Polly Holloway. They met at Salem High School in Salem Arkansas. After graduation, Polly moved with her family to Washington State. Shorty followed his high school sweetheart to Washington and they were married in Sunnyside on September 20, 1944.
He is also survived by his daughter Dianne Greenwald husband Wendell Greenwald, son Aaron Holloway, and five grandchildren: April Knight husband Ron Knight, David Wilde wife Melinda Wilde, Megan Holloway, Kate Holloway, and Zach Holloway, as well as sig great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the staff of Kadlec for their support and compassion during this difficult time.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, January 6, 2013 at Memories at Sunset Event Center at 915 By-Pass Highway, Richland, WA at 3:00 PM.
Well what does one say? Well I will speak from my heart. I really wanted to tell “grandpa” that he was an amazing man. I never saw him get upset or lose his temper. He always had a way to fix ANYTHING!! Truly a master at whatever he was into. I will always remember the fishing/boating at the lake house. Who could ever forget the “crows” he welded up out of old shovel heads. I have shared just a few personal memories, as I hope others do.
You will be missed! But we are grateful we all were able to say goodbye and your now the one being taken care of.
Hugs and love grandpa.
Sorry to hear of your loss. “Shorty” was such a wonderful person. He will be missed. We will remember his friends and family in our prayers.
Sorry for your loss Polly. I will always remember going to your home in richland, with my parents Ruby and Ken. I loved your cats, but loved shorty’s music. The crows he made, my brother rick has them now at his house. My father Ken loved shorty’s music and listened to the tapes when he would take a drive! Take care polly! Your in my thoughts!
I think we may be related would like to know who his parents were my e mail is tohard2getin2@yahoo.com
I am the daughter of Doyle Fraley and sorry for your loss. My father played music with your dad and I remember my dad always talking about your fathers gift. God bless your family at this time of your loss.
Shorty was like a second dad to me. Mrs Holloway always referred to me as her “big” son Aaron was always a few pounds lighter. I have many fond memories but one of my favorites was when Mr Holloway and his buddies played music and told jokes/stories that had me laughing until I cried.I will miss his laugh and positive attitude but I’m sure he is singing now at the top of his lungs!
As I played guitar and sang for a local ministry, I met Shorty. He gave me one of his musical CD’s. He always seemed to have a smile on his face and was always ready to encourage someone else. I’m sure he’s singing in the presence of the Lord.
Alden will be truly missed. I have some of his CDs that he made for me
