Gordon Carl Boehning

Gordon Carl Boehning of Richland passed away July 17, 2013 at Kadlec Medical Center. Gordon was born on December 26, 1920 at Hankinson, North Dakota to John and Mary Boehning. Like many of his generation, he left school at an early age and went to work to help the family. Gordon worked in CCC Camps and also worked on farms around the area.

Gordon was married to Doris Strege on November 11, 1942 in Lidgerwood, North Dakota. Three weeks after their marriage, Gordon was inducted into the Service. He was trained as a mechanic working on ambulances, trucks, and jeeps. On October 5, 1944 he and the men of 328th Inf. boarded the U.S.S. Monticello for "Destination Unknown." On October 20, 1944 after a very rough ocean crossing, the ships carrying the men anchored in the harbor of Marseilles, France in the Mediterranean Sea. Three weeks later the men of the 328th Inf. were in the front lines. Gordon served in France, Germany and Austria. During this time their first son Richard was born. Gordon was discharged from Service on November 11, 1945.

In December of 1945, Gordon and Doris moved to Richland, WA, where he was employed in the Transportation Dept., with Dupont. Two more children David and Connie were born.

Gordon worked at the Hanford Site for more than 37 years, retiring with Westinghouse from the transportation and maintenance Dept in 1983. Through the years Gordon stated that "My Mechanics Training was a plus for employment and was also a gift to my children's car troubles….See Dad."

After retirement, Gordon and Doris enjoyed traveling, going to many countries. He always enjoyed fishing on the Pacific Ocean, and smoking Salmon and Steelhead. Gordon also found time to tend a vegetable garden and keep his lawn work done. He enjoyed many days watching his children and grandchildren play competitive sports.

Gordon was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Doris who passed away in 1989; his daughter, Connie Nicholson in 2003; and his brother Rueben of Kennewick in 1997. He is survived by his two sons Richard Linda and David Jean both of Richland, Washington; eight grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews and special friend Helen Robinson.

A public viewing will be held at Einan's Funeral Home on Sunday, July 21, 2013 from 2:00pm-5:00pm. A graveside service will be held at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Richland, Monday, July 22, 2013 at 10:00am followed by a reception at Memories at Sunset Event Center.
