Ruth Valentine Young Alley

Ruth Alley Young 2/14/33 – 7/15/13

Harriet and Vern Young welcomed their only girl in Prosser, Washington on Valentine's Day in 1933. In high school, Ruth participated in the band and cheerleading, and was the first homecoming queen at Prosser High School. Following completion of a one year business program in Bellingham, WA, she met Paul Alley at a dance in Richland and they married on September 26, 1953. Over the next 15 years, they filled their home with 9 children.

Mom loved being a homemaker and always made sure everyone was well fed, ready for school and outfitted to participate in their many activities. Once all the kids were in school full-time, she began to work outside the home in various secretarial roles until retiring from Westinghouse after 17 years of service. Good natured, patient, devoted and unselfish are just a few words that describe our incredible mom.

Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and siblings. She is survived by her 9 children - Greg Alley Kathy, Teresa Alley, Denise Bryant Mark, Kevin Alley, Helen Alley Bob, Paula Alley Loyd, John Alley, Kathy Payne Keith and Mary Smith Roosevelt - 12 grandchildren Katelyn, Philip, James, Alicia, Olivia, Kandyce, Mikenzye, Madison, Mallory, Jacki, Brandy and Jordyn - 1 great grandchild Angel - and many other cherished relatives.

A viewing will be held at Einan's Funeral Home on Thursday, July 25 at 5:00 pm followed by a Rosary at 6:00 pm. A Catholic funeral service will be held on Friday, July 26 at 11:00 am at Christ the King Catholic Church followed by graveside services at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Richland followed by a reception at the Knight of Columbus.

The family extends their appreciation to the staff at Rosetta Assisted Living for the care they provided our mom, and special thanks to the Lower Valley Hospice team for making her so comfortable in her final days.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Christ the King Catholic Church, 1111 Stevens Drive, Richland, WA 99354, or Lower Valley Hospice, 3920 Outlook Road, Sunnyside, WA 98944.

  • I was married to Paul’s youngest brother Lee for 38 years. During that time we shared many family events with Ruth & Paul and family. Ruth was always so calm and collected as she went about her duties as mother to nine children. I knew as I watched her I did not have that patience, so we settled on four. As I watched her and Paul age, I saw the devotion of those children and how they always looked after their Dad Mom. I pray for them now as they must adjust their lives without her trusted wisdom and love. Now it is up to you kids to carry on their family traditions and love. RIP Ruth, you did a wonderful job with your family.

  • Ruth was my secretary for several years. It seemed that I could never give her enough work to keep her busy. We had an excellent working relationship and when she retired, I missed her. I was able to visit her once at Rosetta which is near my home. I am sorry for your loss.

  • As my mother said, “Ruth was such a good person.”

She was so kind and never seemed frazzled…quite a feat with nine children! Most of all, I will remember her dedication to her faith.

Please know that we send our deepest sympathy and prayers.

    God Bless-
