Gertrude and Ralph were great neighbors in Warden. They were always busy in their garden and very welcoming when neighbors especially the kids visited. Inviting the kids over to “pull taffy” was a favored activity and memory of our own children. Dressing up on Halloween to greet the tricker-treaters with coffee grounds all over her face, was quite typical of the fun to be found in Gertrude and Ralph seemed to get a big kick out of the whole picture. My favorite story we continue to tell, is when we butched Mara’s sheep one fall. We did this while she was gone, but non-the-less, she knew. So she did what any little 8 year old would do. She ran away. Straight up to the corner to Gertrude. I had watched her go, knowing she needed the consolation of her friendly neighbor. Gertrude told Mara the story of the first time she had to butcher a turkey. It helped her understand a little, but she continues to bring it up to this day and Gertrude’s memory lives on.
My Deepest Sympathies to the Knopp Family. My late husband Dan was a good friend to Paul; he shared so many memories with me after we married about his good neighbors the Knopps. The family moved shortly after we married, so I didn’t get to know them as well as Dan. My heart goes out to the entire Knopp family during this sad time. May all your wonderful memories of your mother give you strength in the days ahead, She will be missed by all that knew her.
I am sorry for your loss. YOur Mother and Father were wonderful to me. I worked for them one summer before I graduated from High School in Colville. Your Mom taught me to butcher chickens, help out in the garden and do what ever chore needed done. I remember Laura best as she I believe was the oldest, and such a sweet girl. What a wonderful family, I have often wondered when I pass by your place where everyone went. I lived in the Highlands and was a middle child of 11, so was used to a large family and hard work. Be proud of the strong work ethic they taught.
Sincerely,
Nora Rappe
