Margaret May Bunch

Margaret May Bunch was born November 24, 1926 in Burns, Wyoming to James Edward and Mary Estella Weideburg May. She died in Richland on August 9, 2013 at the age of 86.

She was born in Burns, WY and lived in Wyoming just west of Lyman, NE until her father died when she was six and the family moved to Burns, where they lived with her mother and her uncle, Lawrence Weideburg. She graduated from Burns High School in 1944. After a brief stay in Denver taking nurses training, she returned to Burns to work in the telephone office that her mother managed.

In the summer of 1946 she met Wilbur Bunch and they were married Dec 29, 1946 in Pine Bluffs, WY. Margaret and Wilbur lived in Laramie, WY from 1946 until 1951 while he attended the University. When Wilbur graduated in 1951 they moved to Richland, WA where they resided for the rest of her life.

She had five children: Larry JoAnn of Richland, Jerry of Jacksonville, FL, Jim Sandi of Moses Lake, Janice Tony Maki of Gold Canyon, AZ and Judy Rob Knox of West Richland. These children provided her with fourteen grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren. She was a loving parent, sharing many school and extracurricular activities of her children and grandchildren, cheering them on in their athletic and musical endeavors.

After the children were grown, Margaret sold Avon products and became well acquainted with a large number of people because of her outgoing nature and her ability to remember names and faces of her many customers. She also worked as a part time receptionist for Exxon Nuclear, becoming acquainted with another large group of people. She was a member of the Planterettes Garden Club for fifty years and enjoyed bowling and playing tennis.

Margaret joined Wilbur on many of his business trips, traveling to many cities throughout the US and the world. After his retirement they took a number of cruises throughout the Caribbean, to Alaska, the St Lawrence Seaway, the Panama Canal, and the Mexican Riviera, around South America, down the Amazon River and across the Atlantic Ocean to visit countries in Africa, plus Gibraltar, and Portugal. They had several trips to England one in a rented canal boat and to a number of countries in Europe.

She had an optimistic outlook on life and participated to the fullest extent possible in the activities of her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother. She desired contributions to the Humane Society or charity of your choice rather than flowers.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00pm at Memories at Sunset Event Center in Richland.

  • Janice: I remember your Mom at the RHS sporting events, either watching us play tennis or watching you and the cheerleading squad. I always thought she was one of the cool Moms. Her love for you and your love of her in return was evident. It’s a tough time right now, I know. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Jean

  • “Judy’s mom,” is how I knew Margaret. She always made me smile, and had such a positive outlook in life. Such a great woman to help to raise such a beautiful family. She has left this ever changing world with her family members as examples of her life to carry on her legacy. Prayers of comfort and peace for the family. Especially for my dear friend Judy.

  • Mrs. Bunch was so supportive of Hanford High School’s tennis teams over the years. Sure, her outstanding grandkids Kasey, Molly, and Jake were on the teams, but she was always there for everybody with a thoughtful word of encouragement-even for the coach. We’re all going to miss this great lady for her grace, humor, and wit.

  • Margaret was a very courageous woman. She kept her sense of humor despite numerous medical set-backs in her later years. She loved her children and grandchildren, and especially delighted in watching tennis and attending many musical events. She was there for every family get-together. She will be greatly missed by her extended family.

  • Thinking of “Mrs. Bunch” always makes me smile. It seems like with every conversation with her, I walked away smiling. She had a knack for making any moment a bit better.

A classic example: An ambulance was at their house a couple years ago, and we were watching with concern. As they wheeled her out, she saw us. She was sitting up, moved the oxygen mask and yelled, “It’s my heart!” How could we not smile after that?

Supportive, encouraging, patient, helpful, strong, loving, happy, kind, endless words to describe her. Her wonderful character lives and shows in her family members.

I’m sorry for your loss, and I am so grateful to have known her.

  • I didn’t know Margaret well, but played tennis with her at Howard Amon park. She was such a kick and always brightened my day. She was one of those people I could truly say were “delightful”. She’ll be missed by all who were lucky enough to know her. My sympathies to all the family.
