William Russell Thorson Russ

William Russell Thorson Russ passed away on August 20, 2013 in loving care of his family at Hospice House in Kennewick. Russ was born on January 25, 1917 to Thomas and Emma Thorson in Cashmere Washington. He grew up in Tonasket Washington on the family apple orchard along the Okanogan River. He learned farming, mechanics, and the joy of hunting and fishing from his Dad. His mother, a school teacher, taught him to value education and his faith in God. He loved mathematics, science and solving problems and was quite inventive. He learned to be very independent and how to survive in the Okanogan wilderness. He truly loved the outdoors, especially fishing and hunting. By age 16 he was an excellent marksman, winning the Tonasket turkey shoot multiple times. He enjoyed his violin and always loved classical music.

At WSC he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity and earned his Electrical Engineering degree in 1942. His children and grandchildren were also WSU alum! Go Cougs! He worked his way through college, working summers with his Dad in the orchard. The US Army sent him to graduate school at OSU and Stanford. He was subsequently deployed with the Army in the Signal Corp. to England then Europe via the Normandy invasion.

He was proud to be a WWII veteran – He served in Patton's 3rd Army, 6th Armored Division and earned 5 battle ribbons: Battles of Normandy, Northern France, the Ardennesthe Bulge, the Rhineland liberation of Buchenwald, and the Battle of Central Europe through Czechoslovakia and meeting the Russian army south of Berlin. He often spoke of Palm Sunday services 1945 - with the chaplain serving communion on the hood of a Jeep before crossing the Rhine River to invade Nazi Germany. He said that was when he had trusted in Jesus. He had lots of close calls, but was never hit. He landed in NYC "V-J" Day and was honorably discharged in October 1945.

He married Virginia Anne Barrett, from Port Angeles Washington whom he had met at WSC, on August 30th, 1945.

He worked hard, utilizing his professional expertise and wisdom to keep the Hanford Nuclear reactors safe. He began his career with General Electric, and received his original training with them at Schenectady NY. He was assigned to Hanford WA in 1947, where he worked until he retired in 1982. He was the Primary Power Engineer for the Hanford reactors. He was active in the Richland Rod and Gun Club and taught gun safety classes. In 1983, The Spokesman Review credited him with being one of the Grand Master Steelhead fly fishermen of the Columbia River. As a long time member of Southside Church, he loved worshipping with his extended Church family.

He is survived by his wife Virginia Thorson and his children, Mark Thorson Karen Thorson, Marcia Jensen Chris Jensen and Murray Thorson Susan Thorson. He taught his children the difference between right and wrong, the importance of education and the great value of hard work.

His grandchildren are: Lisa Piantanida Dan Piantanida, Kathy Kunkagam Touray Kungkagam, David Thorson; Nathan Jensen deceased, Daniel Jensen, Lt. USN, Kristi Jensen; Thomas Thorson, Michael Thorson Candi Thorson, Robbie Thorson, Lt. JG. USN. His Great Grandchildren are Tyler Piantanida, Kaitlyn Kungkagam, Claire and Landen Thorson.

Russ lived 96 years, was married to Virginia for 68 years, was an excellent engineer, loved to hunt and fish, suffered with blindness, loss of hearing and heart disease. In the end, he passed away from his loyal family, knowing his Savior Jesus Christ. We look forward to seeing him again in the presence of our Lord.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, August 25th at 2 pm at Southside Church, 517 Jadwin Ave, Richland.

  • I was sorry to hear about Russ passing. Just now saw it posted on Einans Web Page. Has been a pleasure to cut Russ Hair for quite a few years and to listen to his storys. Especially as they related to his wartime experiences. I want to say that he will be missed here at the Barbershop and he always enjoyed Mac and Maggie our Boxers who come to the shop. He alway ask how they were doing. My thoughts and prayers and with the family.

  • Dear Virginia, Mark, Marsha & Murray, I send my sincere condolences to the family of a long-time acquaintence & fellow worker. During our car-pooling days from the “Lewis & Clark District” to the 700 Area work place, I observed that Russ was a man of high principals. You see, I was the ONLY “bean-counter”, as they labeled me, amongst a car load of four Design Engineers! A SHARP G.I. salute to a fellow WW II vet, and God rest his Soul.

  • Our condolences to Virginia and all extended family in the loss of Russ. His remarkable life as a family man, soldier, engineer, and accomplished outdoors-man has been a testimony with dignity and heart. His country benefited from his sacrifices and work ethic. We are thankful he shared his deep faith in Jesus Christ with all of us at Southside Church.

  • Grace and peace through Jesus Christ to Virginia, your children, and extended family. About two years ago, I spent only 4 to 6 hours getting aquainted with Russ at Murray’s house and again when he visited our church. Our conversations gravitated to our common interest of electrical engineering. He described his part in the development of the first transistor, and his design of electric power feed circuits for huge pumps at Hanford. We acknowledged that God had placed him in “the right place at the right time” for him to solve such problems and to enjoy his work. How far the transistor has come! I appreciated the immediate friendship that I felt from this pioneer of an engineer.

  • I grew up with the Thorsons as a neighbor just a few houses away from the Thorson residence. My father, Ted Lewis Sr., always had the utmost respect for Russ. They worked together as engineers from the early days at Hanford til their retirement in the 80’s. Russ had a “super” basement where we kids would play two-board Monopoly on weekends. He had groomed Brittneys that were wizarrds in the field and enjoyed by us kids. Russ shared many stories with me regarding WWII. I have the deepest respect for this part of Russ’s history- his sacrifice for country is difficult to quantify. I worked at the 100N Reactor for three years 1978 to 1981. As a training specialist, I made contacts with many engineering experts to develop training. I could always count on Russ to explain the details regarding the flow of electrical power to and within the facility. Russ was incredibly technical, but so down to earth in neighborly conversation. Peace be with you, Russ. Kurt Lewis.

  • The Richland Rod and Gun Club offers their condolences on the passing of former member Russ Thorson on Aug. 20, 2013. Russ joined the Club in 1963 and was a member for 34 years. In addition to teaching Hunter Safety Classes he was active on several club committees and worked on many Club projects. He liked to hunt and was an excellent fly fisherman. For deer hunting he and some friends would gather at another friends cabin in the Spokane area. They would hunt deer all day and play bridge in the evening. Being a bridge player myself I was rather envious of that arrangement. Russ liked the Clubs calendars and when he could no longer attend meetings he called and asked me to bring him one.

In 1988 he received the Club’s 25 year belt buckle. He will be missed.

  • I am a Thorson family history researcher, and just found this obituary. I did not know William Russell, but he is my first cousin once removed. His father and my grandfather Carl were half brothers. He has a half-nephew, Loren Thorson, father Albert, living in Arizona. If the family would like to get in touch, I would love to hear from them. Perhaps the funeral home can supply my e-address. Condolences on your loss.
