From Richland, WA | Born in Portland, OR
Pamela Lee Castleberry
Pamela Lee Castleberry passed away peacefully into the loving arms of her Savior, Jesus Christ, on Friday, October 11th, 2013. She was very brave and courageous during a brief battle with pancreatic cancer.
Pam was born in Portland, Oregon to Robert and Mildred Shine on November 20th, 1942. She moved to Richland, WA with her parents and her brother, David Shine, in 1948 and has continued to live in Richland since that time. Pam graduated from Richland High School in 1960, where she frequently sang at assemblies and in school musicals. She was a very gifted singer.
In 1961, she married Jim Castleberry and soon found herself surrounded by three children - Jimmie, Jeanette and Polly. When the kids became school aged, Pam went to college and diligently worked to obtain a Master of Art's degree from Central Washington University. She graduated with honors.
Pam taught elementary and middle school in Richland for thirty years, first at Lewis and Clark Elementary, then Chief Joseph Middle School. She loved teaching and always had great stories to tell of how her students excelled, especially within debate class, her favorite subject to teach. Pam loved to banter back and forth with the kids and enjoyed their witty responses. There was never a dull moment in the classroom.
During retirement, Pam most enjoyed reading and studying God's word. See loved quiet times with the Lord, out in her backyard surrounded by her beautiful flowers. Pam's best friend, Jesse Deward, helped her keep the flowers and the yard in tip-top shape all throughout the summer. Mom always appreciated his green thumb and his willingness to help out with anything she might need. He was a tremendous blessing to her over the years.
Pam enjoyed spending time with family...It was always great to get together for a family barbeque or to spend time together for the holidays. She also greatly cherished her Rottweiler, Zachary, and taking long walks with him along the river.
Most of all, Pam treasured going to church and praising the Lord. She loved joining with the church body in praise and worship to Jesus. Pam was a prayer warrior and diligently prayed for her family, friends and anyone who God happened to lay on her heart.
Pam is survived by her three children: Jimmie Castleberry Vicki, Jeanette Castleberry, Polly Shupe Nick; and her grandchildren: Kelly Castleberry, Jake Goodenow, Sydney Beary, Nico Shupe and Millie Shupe.
Pam will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. We rejoice that she is in Heaven, but still selfishly would like to have had more time with her on earth... It's always hard to say goodbye. We love you, Mom, bunches and bunches, forever and always!
Mrs Castleberry was my 6th grade teacher at Jason Lee Elementary school in Richland, Washington. She has always been my #1 teacher! It’s heartbreaking to discover that she’s passed away and I offer my sincerest condolences to her loved ones. So sorry for your loss.
I am so sorry to hear of Mrs. Castleberry’s passing. I apologize that this is so many years after the fact. I was in her last 6th grade class at Lewis & Clark and we both went on to Chief Joseph when the building reopened. I was blessed to have her as my teacher once again in 8th grade. I still have the letter she wrote to our 6th grade class, written in her unique and unforgettable handwriting. Mrs. Castleberry believed in me when I couldn’t believe in myself. Her classroom was a soft place to land during a difficult time in my childhood. I’ll never forget Mrs. Castleberry. I think of her often and will continue to do so.

My condolences to the family and close friends of Pam’s. I enjoyed working in her classroom at Chief Joe. She was a very inspiring and interesting woman. We talked about all sorts of things during lunchbreak, including family, the Bible, students, politics, anything that was happening in the world and tried relating world events to the Bible. I don’t think there was ever a day where I didn’t see her laugh or smile. After she retired we had our quarterly dinners where we would get caught up on news and family and interests. She was a very loving person and friend and I will miss her a lot.
Mrs Castleberry was my 6th grade teacher and she was FANTASTIC!!! One of my most favorite teachers. My condolences to her family. We were the only 6th grade class that year and we always wanted to make her proud. She will be missed so much.
To my favorite teacher ever….even after all these years! You were the best. Rest in peace Mrs. Castleberry….6th grade Lewis and Clark.. 1986. Love and peace to your family. :-
Mrs Castleberry was my 6th grade teacher at Lewis and Clark and I will never forget her. She was one of those special people who was meant to teach. My thoughts and prayers go out to her family, she truly was a wonderful woman.
So sorry to hear of your loss. Mrs. Castleberry was a wonderful teacher I had her in 6th grade she made learning fun and I have thought of her often through the years. She left an impression on me that has lasted through my adult life.
Mrs. Castleberry was one of my favorite teachers ever, and I still have a lot of vivid and happy memories from her 4th and 6th grade classes. She had high standards, a great sense of humor, and a deep commitment to her students. She even came to my high school graduation. My thoughts are with her family, and I am glad that she was one of my teachers.
I am so sorry you have lost your wonderful Mom. She also taught at Jason Lee; I know because she was my son Jason’s fourth AND sixth grade teacher there–what a tremendous person and teacher–she loved the kids and really knew how to challenge them and care for them at the same time. There are certainly not many like Pam.

Words cannot describe how wonderful a person that your Mom, Pam, truly was. She lived her daily life to a very high standard and has definitely left this world a better place. Sadly, she left too soon, but at least she is not suffering. My thoughts are with you during this very difficult time.
