Lola Riley Scalley Yale
Lola Riley Scalley Yale, 78, died early Sunday morning, May 4th, 2014.
Lola was born in a farmhouse in Goldendale, moving at age 2 to spend the rest of her childhood at the family farm in Walla Walla.
She and six siblings helped on their family farm, raising hogs, turkeys, dairy cows, hay and alfalfa.
Lola played trumpet, sang in school, church choirs, took art classes and loved playing baseball.
Lola attended WSU were she met her husband, Doug Scalley. They married in 1954 in Walla Walla.
Lola and Doug moved often for his job with U & I Sugar Company, living in Utah, Idaho and Washington, raising 7 children along the way. Lola and Doug became members of the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in 1963 and were sealed as a family in 1964 at the Idaho Falls Temple.
After 26 years of marriage, Lola's life was shattered when Doug died, leaving her a widow, at the age of 45.
Lola married Robert Yale in 1983 and began a new chapter in her life. When Bob took early retirement in 1989, they were able to find a mountain cabin along the Columbia Gorge. They enjoyed building and creating a retreat for family and friends to enjoy. They lived eight years there until health concerns caused them to return to the Tri-Cities.
Lola was known as a woman of many talents. While living in Moses Lake she was given the recognition of Woman of Achievement, which sums up her life.
Lola directed choirs throughout her life in communities where she lived, a highlight was performances at the Spokane Expo.
For her 75th birthday wish, during practice sessions, she was able to sing with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.
Lola also wrote and directed church and community productions including the LDS Kennewick Stake church history musical and the city of Kennewick's Centennial Musical performed in the Tri-Cities coliseum in 2004.
Lola's artwork could be found in store windows, elementary schools, and even the lion at Kennewick High School. Her portrait sketches also hang on the walls of family and friends homes.
Another love of Lola's was Family History. She gathered family lines into her heart and created our strong family tree. Her research of stories and photos fill volumes.

My sweet Sheri, my heart goes out to you and your family. God knows I understand your loss and pain as I lost my beautiful mother a couple years ago. If I weren’t traveling the country right now I would be there with you. Remember until you are united in Heaven you have a special Angel watching over you. I talk to Mom every day and write her notes. I know she hears me and sees them, Heavenly Father will comfort her and your family during this time of separation. God bless you.
To the family of Lola Yale. We are so sorry for your loss. Lola was my wife’s primary teacher and she has such fond memories of Lola. I had the pleasure of meeting Lola a couple of times at her home. She is a bright and vivacious person. As a wedding gift she sketched Rachel and I in a drawing that now hangs on our wall and we really treasure it. Our condolences to you. We pray for peace during your mourning. How grateful I am for God’s plan of happiness. Its so hard to lose a mother, wife and friend.
My heart goes out to all the family. I met Bob and Lola three years ago, through Bob’s brother. I fell in love with them both. Lola and I became great friends and I witnessed so many talents this beautiful person was given by our Lord. She will be truly missed always. My love and support to her Bob.
Margie, so sorry to hear of your loss. My condolences to you and your family. We will keep you in our prayers.
I am so saddened to hear of Lola’s passing. She was a warm and dear spirit, with so much talent, and the Tri-Cities will suffer her loss. She recruited me to sing at the Millennium New Year’s Eve Party in Richland, as well as in the Kennewick Centennial program. She never stopped encouraging me to sing, even if I wasn’t as receptive as I should’ve been. This was truly a magnificent, remarkable, and praiseworthy lady, and I’ve no doubt she’s in a better place now. Rest well, Lola. We love you!
Bob and family – please accept our heartfelt condolences at the passing of Lola – she was an amazing woman and we were blessed to know both of you while we lived in Kennewick.

It is so hard to think our sister Lola can no longer talk to us. Rex and I will never forget the visits, eating and talks with Bob and Lola when we were in the Tri Cities. It was a time for remembering past times, and current events. All you Scalley children are examples of her caring and love she gave as a mother. Blessings on all of you, dear Sheri, Karen, Margie, Laurie, Patty, Paul, and David. Aunt Alice
I am deeply saddened by the passing of such a beautiful, talented and caring woman. If it weren’t for Aunt Lola and her sleuthing diligence, the family history of the Yale’s would not have come to pass. She was quite the spirited person and will be greatly missed. My love and prayers to Uncle Bob and the rest of her family.
Aunt Lola was a caring and giving woman that I admired and respected. I loved talking to her or should I say her talking to me!about the family history and history of the Tri-cities. She had so much knowlede of so many things. She will be missed but always in my thoughts and prayers. I hope St Peter has some time to listen to all her questions! I love you Miss Lola, may you rest in peace with the lord.
Lola’s was such a vibrant and inspiring lady. I will truly miss talking with her, or should I say listening to her. :- She had a lot of knowledge about so many things. I could always count on her to enlighten me. I can see her so clearly in my mind, her beautiful smile and her warm loving laugh. I will really miss her.
I am so sorry for your loss. Your mother was such an amazing woman and so beautiful. I am glad she was able to sing with the Tabernacle Choir, what a great experience. Lola was a wonderful combination of talents: creative, organized, and focused. I enjoyed working with her on the City of Kennewick Centennial. She poured so much energy and enthusiasm into that project and it was enjoyed by so many people. And I was grateful to work with her in stake church programs and exchanging info about what music we were using in our Ward choirs. I will always remember Lola for her inner beauty and strength and her creative spirit. She will be dearly missed.
