Marvin E. Borgeson
07/28/1931 — 07/14/2014
From Richland, WA | Born in Park River, ND
Marvin E. Borgeson
Marvin Edward Borgeson was born July 28, 1931 in Park River, North Dakota. He passed into the loving presence of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on July 14, 2014. Marvin was the seventh and last child born to Norwegian and Swedish immigrants Netta Nyseth Borgeson and Elmer Borgeson. His father died when Marvin was 2 years old leaving his mother and siblings to work their farm on the North Dakota Prairie. Surrounded by relatives on neighboring farms, attending their two-room schoolhouse through the eighth grade, and centering their lives in the Lutheran church, they had an amazing life with much hard work, but lots of happiness. Marvin's heart never left the farm. He loved to reminisce about being taken to school in a horse-drawn sleigh, driving the potato truck in the fields when he was only 9 years old, throwing 100-lb potato sacks on the truck when he was a strapping teenager, and boarding in town to attend high school during the winters. In February 1952, Marvin enlisted in the United States Air Force where he served as a maintenance crew chief for jet fighter planes. His duty included time in Germany and at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. He returned to North Dakota on leave to marry Marilyn Belle McLean of Edinburg, North Dakota in December of 1953. During his time in the Air Force he attained the rank of Staff Sgt. Aircraft Mechanic. After fulfilling his enlistment in February 1956, he returned home to begin college on the G.I. Bill. He entered North Dakota State Agricultural College in Fargo, where in his senior year he was president of his engineering honorary society, Pi Tau Sigma. Marilyn taught school until the birth of their daughter, Katherine Ann, in August 1959. She died unexpectedly two months after Katherine's birth, leaving Marvin a widower as he began his senior year of college. His mother, Netta, came to care for Kathy as he finished his degree in mechanical engineering in the spring of 1960. The three of them moved to Richland, Washington after graduation when he accepted a job with General Electric. There, Marvin soon met and courted another schoolteacher, Pauline Bowles, who had just arrived in town from Portland, Oregon. They were married August 11, 1962. Pauline then adopted Kathy. In March 1966, they adopted Mark Henry into their family. In June 1968, they welcomed Stella Marie. Their fourth child, Jon Benjamin, was born in October 1973. Marvin built a wonderful home for his family in 1970, fenced the land, and proceeded to create something of rural North Dakota life for the pleasure of his family on all of two acres. There was nothing in Marv and Pauline's home or on their property that the born and raised farm boy couldn't fix. Marvin worked for various contractors on the Hanford reservation as the companies came and went General Electric, Isochem, Battelle, and Westinghouse Hanford Company. At Westinghouse, where he was Manager of Project Engineering, he ended his career as part of the team constructing the HAMMER facility. He retired from Westinghouse December 30, 1999. Marvin and Pauline then spent many years traveling in their beloved RV before Marv's declining health kept them homebound. They created fabulous memories for the family with trips to the Oregon Coast and visits to their sons in Connecticut, Virginia, California, and Illinois, while taking in countless historical sites and museums. Some of the most important trips were to their much-loved Bible conferences to hear the wonderful Bible teaching they found in later life. Marvin was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, and all but one sibling. He is survived by his wife of over fifty years, Pauline Borgeson; daughters Kathy Dave Blanchard and Stella Robbins Jeff Johnston; sons Mark Yolanda Borgeson and Jon Ronda Borgeson; one sister, Ellen Jonsrud; and nine grandchildren Ryan Blanchard, Rebekah Blanchard, Kody Robbins, Shyanne Robbins, Kolt Robbins, Taylor Robbins, Mark Borgeson, Jr., Tage Borgeson, and Andrew Garces. Marvin was a man of integrity. He was a family man, a wonderful provider, and a steadfastly upright example to his children. His faith was in his Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, and he led his children to know the Lord. We loved him, and will miss him deeply until we meet again in heaven. His memorial service will be held on Monday, July 21, 2014, at 10:30 a.m, in the Einan's at Sunset Event Center, 915 Bypass Highway, Richland, WA.
Mark, I am Sorry for your loss. I did not know your Dad but I know you and I’m sure a lot of what you are was from him. I know he was a good man and will be dearly missed. I just wanted to say I was thinking of you and know he was a great person in your life. Stay strong and know he was a proud Dad!
Jon,
Our deepest sympathies and condolences to you and your entire family. We are sorry for your loss, your family is on our prayers.
I worked with Marv for many years, him with Westinghouse and me with Kaiser, and have fond memories of our relationship, and great respect for him as a business associate and a good friend. My sincere condolences to the family.
Marv was a good friend at work in his early years at Hanford and as our families grew up. I remember water skiing together on the Columbia off of an island in north Richland. Blessings and fond memories to Pauline, children and grandchildren.
Jon and Family,
We are very sorry for your loss and you have our sincerest sympathies. Your grief is shared in our hearts and prayers. Peace be with you.
Sincerely,
Ed and Sally Yoder
