EUGENE LEE "SKIP" WOOD, Jr.

Eugene Lee "Skip" Wood, Jr. 66, passed away on August 29, 2014. He was born in Meridian, Idaho to Eugene Lee Wood, Sr. and Clarice Anita Rossow on June 27, 1948. The name Skipper was given to him at birth by his father who was in the Navy and considered Skip his first mate.

Skip was a Vietnam Veteran, once discharged he completed college, got his Bachelor of Arts degree, became a high school art teacher and received "Teacher of the Year" award. After 3 years of teaching he decided it was time for a change and moved to Richland in 1978 to begin a new career in Nuclear Construction.

It was there that he met the love of his life Shelley and another adventure began. They moved across the United States working at various Commercial Nuclear Power Plants and making many friends along the way. In 1984 Skip accepted a position with MAC/MACTEC, Inc. and remained with them for 20 years working as a Project Manager, in Business Development and became one of their Vice Presidents.

There wasn't an apartment or house that we lived in that Skip didn't make a space to do his wood working, water color painting or beer brewing. I did have to put my foot down when he started stripping an old chair in the bathroom and the fumes were so bad that the entire floor we lived on had to nearly be evacuated.

Skip is survived by his partner/wife of nearly 36 years, Shelley Hankins, mother Clarice Wood, sisters Pam Wood Frank Frymire, Nancy Williams Mike, Fred Wood Sue, mother in law Shirley Hankins, brother in law Mac Hankins, sister in law Sherrey Hankins Jim Penor along with 3 nephews, 1 great nephew and 2 great nieces.

He is proceed in death by his father, Eugene Lee Wood, Sr.

The family gives thanks to the care provided by Lower Valley Hospice Heartlinks and Callaway Gardens' wonderful staff and caregivers. Their care and compassion is one that will always be remember.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the: Alzheimer's Association, Inland Northwest Chapter or Heartlinks Hospice and Palliative Care in Sunnyside.
A Celebration of Life will be on Saturday September 13th, at 4:00 pm, Hampton Inn in Richland.

  • Shelley:

It was shocking to hear that Skip passed on. We worked so closely together in Mactec and I always remember him as full of life. His positive attitude was contagious. He was ever helpful, never had an enemy and was so dedicated to his work. The clients just loved him. I know he has not been well these past few years, but my memories of him are always as a happy, healthy guy. It is really unfortunate God has taken him away from us at such young age. Be strong, Shelley, his memories will give you the strength. Let me know if I can help. My phone no. is 425 449 8484. God bless and may Skip’s soul rest in peace

  • I spent 14 years at MACTEC and any time I worked with Skip, there was never a dull moment. We traveled together on some DOE assignments and when the workday was done, the “party began”, especially if Mike Kurpinski was traveling along!

Skip was always upbeat, a very good “people person”, knew how to run projects & keep the client happy, and get people to both enjoy the work and enjoy working for MACTEC and Skip.

    He will be greatly missed!
