Obituary for Helen Thurston
Helen Marie Somdahl-Thurston, 87, of West Richland, passed away August 26, 2014. She was born on August 16, 1927 in Valley City, North Dakota to Louis and Elizabeth Somdahl. Helen attended school in Wisconsin and graduated from the High School in Antigo, Wisconsin.
In 1947 Helen married Cashmir Matuszweski at Antigo, but, sadly, their happiness was cut short as Cashmir died from illness a brief number of years later. A number of organizations benefited from Helen's volunteering, including The Young Ladies Institute, and she was an active member at Christ the King Church in Richland. She was employed at Christ the King School in Richland, working in the cafeteria. All who knew Helen would testify to her gentle, kindhearted spirit, her love for family, and the great value she put on her faith in God.
Helen was preceded in death by her first husband, Cashmir Matuszweski; brother, Gene Somdahl; sisters, Evelyn and Phyllis; daughter, Karen Matuszweski-Montgomery; and her second husband, Everal "Bud" Thurston.
She is survived by sons, Larry and David Matuszweski of West Richland; and grandson Marcel S. Combs.
A Rosary will be held 7:00 PM, Friday, September 5th at Einan's at Sunset in Richland. The Memorial Mass will be held at Christ the King Church in Richland at 10:00 AM, Saturday, September 6th. Inurnment will be held at Resthaven Cemetery.
David, Larry and Marcel –
I am so very sorry to hear of the loss of your mother and grandmother. Please know you are in my thoughts and prayers.
I recall your visits to Wisconsin and the time spent at the farm – Time spent together will always be treasured and remembered.
Gods Blessings always.

I had the pleasure of knowing Helen for only about five years. I groomed her sweet dog Snoopy. She loved that sweet little dog and they were the best of friends. She was a very kind and gentle lady. She always brightened my day when I saw or spoke to her. She will be missed and may she rest in peace. God Bless
Thank you for sharing your dear mother and grandmother with the DeVries family. Helen was such a kind and caring soul and was loved dearly. We mourn her loss, but are so happy that she safe in the warm and loving embrace of the Lord.
My sincere condolences to Helen and Buds family – now Helen. I knew Helen several years ago as a member of TOPS #WA 890 Richland. She was such a sweet, pleasant, lady – and devoted wife to Bud and family. We attended many TOPS functions together and I considered both of them friends. They so enjoyed their place up in Packwood. They are together again. Sorry I can’t attend the services.

David, Larry, and Marcel, I am so sorry to hear of the passing of your mother and grandmother. Please accept my condolences. Helen was an exceptional mother, who graciously dealt with the many hardships in her life. She may have moved far away to Washington State after the passing of your father Cash, but we were so fortunate and blessed that she continued the close relationship with the Matuszewski family here in Wisconsin. We all enjoyed her many visits. She lived a long and full life. Your Wisconsin family have you in our thoughts and prayers. Lee Ann Matuszewski-Hindman
