George Orville Stiman

George O. Stiman, longtime resident of Richland, passed away Thursday morning October the 30th at Tranquility Manor in Kennewick, Washington. He was 95.

He was born in Beaconsfield, Iowa, the 27th of January 1919, one of six children born to William O. and Opal Cline Stiman. He grew up in Seymour, Iowa and was a veteran of World War II. He married Fern Alene Roberts August 7th, 1944 in Seattle, Washington. They had two sons: Bill & Mike Stiman.

In 1969, he joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the family was sealed in the Idaho Falls Temple, March 19, 1974.

He was a Hanford Patrolman from 1947 until his retirement in 1983. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing horseshoes. He was a member of the Columbia Basin Horseshoe Club, and pitched until he was nearly 90 years old. One of our family activities was fishing. If he didn't catch any fish, he could always make up a big story about the one that got away.

George lovingly cared for his wife through her extended illness. Fern died August 24, 1986. George's special friend Kathleen Kelly passed away in 2011.

George is survived by his sister Jennie Mortley of Polk City, Iowa and a brother-in-law Ken Bass of Seattle. He is also survived by his sons and their wives Bill and Barb of Provo Utah and Mike and Dolores of Pasco, Washington, and grandson Shawn, also of Pasco. Nieces and nephews: Myrna Melling, Carol Helm, Bonnie Anderson, Sue Prezbindowski, Charlie Bass, Tami Roberts, Jim Stiman, Jim Bennett, Richard Bennett-Woods, Cheryl Deveraux, Sue Mitchell, and Maxine Chandler. And many more relatives and friends.

We all miss you.

Viewing and funeral will be at the LDS Stake Center 1720 Thayer Dr., Richland, on Wednesday November the 5th. Viewing 9:30-10:30 AM and the funeral at 11:00 AM.

  • When you lose someone so very precious as your Dad was, no one can really know all that you feel, but please know that my thoughts are with you during this time of sorrow.

I am Kathleen’s niece from Illinois. My husband,Ray,and I had a lot of fun times together with Aunt Kay and your Dad. He was “Uncle George” to us.

Extending my sympathy to your families, I remain

  • I worked with your dad on Hanford Patrol. He always had a smile and a joke to pass on. I started in ’79 so I only had 5 years with him. He was a good man and a great Patrolman.

  • So sorry to learn of the loss of such a good friend of my parents. I was searching to tell him my mother had died July 26 2015 when I came across this posting. Mother would have liked to visit one more time about the War years and the fun they had. I have a photo of Fern and George from those days and it looks like they did live life to the fullest.
Our deepest sympathies to your family and friends.
