Janet Wilson Scott

Janet Wilson Scott was born May 17, 1923 on her parents, John and Laura Wilson's farm, just outside of Rural Valley, Pennsylvania. She was the second oldest of four daughters. She died peacefully with her children by her side, in the early hours of December 14, 2014

Janet grew up on a 314 acre dairy farm in western Pennsylvania and attended a one room school nearby. All four sisters went on to attend college, which was unusual at that time. Janet graduated from Indiana State Teachers College in Indiana, Pennsylvania and then did post graduate work at Penn State. Following her graduation she taught school for over ten years. Her first teaching job was at Slate Hill School in NuMine, PA. There she taught 34 children ranging in grades from first to fourth, all in one class. The following four years she taught second and third graders and had anywhere from 50, to 46, to 27 students in her class at one time.

Janet met her husband, Fred or Scotty as she liked to call him, in Rochester, New York, and they were married in 1951, on her parent's farm. After their marriage, they moved to Troy, New York so that Scotty could continue his education. Janet went to work teaching in another one room school in Verdoy, New York. This schoolhouse has since been turned into a one room school house museum.

When Scotty completed his schooling he accepted a job at Hanford, and they moved to the Tri-Cities in 1952. They lived there for the next 52 years in their original government house. In 1953 the first of two children was born, and Janet gave up teaching to become a full time mom, which also encompassed teaching Sunday School and being a Brownie leader. She enjoyed camping, water skiing on the Snake River, agate hunting, asparagus gathering, backpacking and accompanying Scotty on hunting and fishing trips including one to Alaska and another to the Arctic Circle. She had many memorable adventures and escapades in the pick up truck with Scotty. After Scotty's retirement, they did some adventurous traveling to different parts of Mexico, Machu Picchu in Peru, Brazil, Argentina, New Zealand, and Ireland. They also saw the southwest and northeastern parts of the US. Pennsylvania remained her favorite place to visit, and she went there for the last time this last August. Walking on the farm was probably her favorite thing to do.

Janet was devoted to her family. Embroidery, crocheting and rug weaving were things she enjoyed doing, as well as going to concerts. She made more cookies and pies in her lifetime than anyone I knew, keeping a large mixer on her kitchen counter, at all times. Skiing buddies could always count on Robert having extra goodies packed into his lunch to share. She assisted her son in selling produce at the Pasco Farmers Market under the name of Nine Canyon Farms for 22 years. She was in her element at the market, meeting the people and making many friends. One year their booth won the Farmer of the Year award. Well into her 80s she arose at 5AM to arrive and set up the booth, which had an amazing variety of apricots, peaches, squash, apples and vegetables of which she knew the attributes of each.

Janet was a long time member of CUP Church and enjoyed playing bridge. She belonged to several bridge clubs, one for over 40 years. Bridge was on Tuesdays, for as long as I can remember. She played the week before her death and was all set to host the women the next week.

Mom will be missed beyond what words can express, but we feel very blessed to have had her as a mother and grandmother for so many years. She is survived by her son Robert, her daughter, MaryBeth Janzen, son-in-law Michael and grandchildren Thomas and Ben Janzen, as well as her sister Freda Fulton.

Services will be December 27th at 11AM at Central United Protestant Church, 1124 Stevens Drive, Richland.

  • Dear Scott Family: Unfortunately I will be out of town on the 27th – so sorry to miss Janet’s service. I knew Janet through church. She was one of five of us who sat is the same pew every Sunday. We would be able to talk briefly there and also over coffee and doughnuts after the service. We had a connection because both myself and my husband were born in Pennsylvania so we had good talks about her trips there. I will miss her – she was a sweet lady.

  • We bought our home 8 years ago. After shortly moving in a lady neighbor came to welcome us and brought peaches to our home. She said her son did the farmer’s market. This meeting turned into friendship. We met the whole family: Scotty, Robert & Mary Beth. She loved to show me the photo book her daughter, Mary Beth put together and always bragging on her son, Robert. She was always invited to our BBQ’s or just come over and have tea. She would bake and always bring us some of what she baked. She would bring me her extra jars. I know you are in a better place, we will miss you so much but you will always be in our hearts. RIP dear friend.
