From Richland, WA | Born in Yakima, WA

Richard (Dick) L. Martin

Col Richard (Dick) L. Martin USAR (Ret)

Dick was born August 20, 1936 in Yakima, WA to Sidney and Ruth Martin and passed away at Quail Hollow in Richland, WA, an assisted living facility, on Monday, January 27, 2015.  He was 78 years old.

He graduated from Yakima High School, Yakima Valley Junior College, and Central Washington College.

Dick joined the Army Reserve in 1957 and spent 37 years until he retired. He spent seven years as an enlisted man until he became a commissioned officer and through promotions he attained the rank of Colonel and was appointed as the 2nd Brigade Commander of the 104th Division at Pasco, WA, for a four year period until his retirement.  He took pride in his military career and was proud to serve his country.

He married Shirley Adams in May of 1957 and they were married 57 years.   Upon graduation from college they moved to Walla Walla, WA where he taught school at Garrison Jr. High and where Dick later became the public relations director for the school district.  They then moved to Portland, OR where he became assistant manager of Northwest Food Processors Association.  Again they moved to Yakima, WA and he was a co-owner in Ichabods Tavern.  After the business was sold, the family moved to Sunnyside, WA where he became assistant manager and later manager of the Washington Asparagus Growers Association.  While working at the Asparagus Growers Association he participated in the first Agricultural and Forestry Leadership Training class and traveled to the Orient and China to study their agricultural methods. When the Asparagus Association dissolved he and Shirley moved to Richland, WA and Dick became the Facilities Manager at 100N on the Hanford Reservation for Bechtel until his retirement.  He loved to hunt but fishing was his true passion.

After he retired, he would spend three months out of the year as a volunteer deck hand on the KADAHO charter boat in Depoe Bay, OR, and he and Shirley spent time traveling until his health declined.

Dick had many great accomplishments in his lifetime and many great travel experiences.

He is survived by his wife Shirley, a son Richard (Rick)(Sandi) Martin, a daughter Bonnie Martin; granddaughters Tabbatha (Eli) Callaghan, Amanda (Cameron) Fox, and Victoria Bretz; four great-grandchildren, two sisters Harriet (Don) Clark and Judy (Roy) Williams and numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by a son and daughter, his parents, and both sets of grandparents.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either the Heartlinks Hospice Care or the Amanda Fox Medical Fund thru GESA Credit Union for his granddaughter.

Einan’s Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.  A memorial service will be held on Friday, February 6 at 1:00 p.m. at Einan’s Sunset Chapel, Richland, WA.

  • I was saddened to hear of Dick’s death as were all of us in his high school class. I went to McKinley Grade School with Dick. He and I were boy friend/girl friend in the 6th grade. We were chosen to visit the Freedom Train and report back to the class. An entry in my 6th grade diary might be interesting: “While we were standing outside to come in, I said, “Where is Dickie? And He was right behind me! I was so embarrassed!” Dick will be remembered forever. My sympathy to the entire family.

  • Coming to Hanford as part of the Bechtel Organization’s Clean-up mission, Dick was one of the first people I met and worked with at 100-N until his retirement. Dick will always be remembered for his pleasant can-do attitude and work ethic.
Smiling came easy to Dick, and he was always ready to share a fish story or two. I am glad that I met Dick and I thank God for people like him who helped to make this country great. I will miss you.

  • My dear Bonnie
Just to let you know that I am thinking of you at this hard time that you are going thru. I know your love for you dad was so wonderful. And you were such a great daughter to him when he had to go to the home for extra care. You always took that extra mile to make sure he was doing okay. Your dad is never far away as you are a part of him and he will always be in your heart and soul.

  • I was honored to have met and worked with Dick as one of many members of the N Reactor family at 100N Area. I remember him as a kind and compasionate person with a great sense of humor and the strongest work ethic of anyone I have ever known. I was a secretary during the time I worked with Dick and he was the go-to-guy for office moves, searches for furniture, and anything else related to building needs. He was never too busy to help. Just wanted to add this note as a reminder of all of the people he touched during his working years at N – and there were many. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

  • Dick Martin was the Battalion Commander of the 3rd Bn 416th Regt. Our Regimental motto was “Ne Plus Ultra” (None Finer).
That motto sums up my feelings for Col Martin. He was the finest Commander I ever served with.

  • There are many things we remember such as family gatherings during the holidays and family reunions. Shirley, you and Dick were there for us when Mary was ill. You took the time to see her when she was unable to come see you. You both have strong family values and we will always be thankful for your kindness.
