Johnny George Carlisle
May 26, 1924 - February 22, 2015
Johnny was born in Big Sandy, Texas to Jesse Herndon Carlisle and
Annie Alma McIntosh Carlisle. He was the youngest of the family's eight
children.
He learned the value of hard work growing up on the family farm. Upon
graduating from high school in 1941, Johnny served in the Army Air Force, and
was stationed at Camp Williams in Salt Lake City where he met Bonnie Helen Mahoney
who was studying to be a nurse. They continued to correspond when he was
deployed to the Burma Theater. Among other missions, he "flew the
hump" several times over the Himalayas to deliver supplies to the besieged
Chinese city of Kunming.
After the war he married Bonnie on June 16, 1946. They
were sealed in the Salt Lake City Temple on April 7, 1958. Johnny spent his
career in chemical process operations at the Hanford site. Bonnie and Johnny
had four children: David, Terry Lee, Douglas, and Shirley.
Johnny is preceded
in death by his seven siblings, his wife Bonnie, daughter Terry Lee, his
granddaughter Kara Dawn Carlisle Stewart, and great-granddaughter Colbie Nicole
Ostler. He then married Velma Clement Roberts on August 8, 2006 in the Columbia
River Temple.
He is survived by 9 children, 33 grandchildren, 67
great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild. Johnny has always wanted us
to know of his strong testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ, and of his
gratitude for his family and friends who so enriched his life. His love and
example will continue to live in each of us.
Funeral services will be Saturday, February 28, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. in the Jadwin LDS chapel in Richland. Public viewing is at Einan's Funeral Home in Richland on Friday, February 27, 2015 from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.
I have such wonderful memories of this Giant of a man. A giant spiritually, in kindness, friendship and his smile. He is greatly loved and will be greatly missed. May the Lord bless your family.
Doug,
My condolences on the passing of your Dad! I remember him well. He would always greet me with an infectious smile. My 90 yr. old Dad also passed recently (Jan. 1, 2015). My Dad also served in the Army Air Corps during WW II in the China-Burma-India Theater. He was stationed in the Assam Province of India as a high-speed radio operator. I mention this because they may have unknowingly communicated with one another on your Dad’s flights over “The Hump”! What a small world. Take care Friend!
