Rubye Sadelle Pierce

Rubye Sadelle Pierce died peacefully in the company of her family at 89 years of age the evening of April 22, 2015 at Guardian Angel Homes in Richland, WA. She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Leo Richard Pierce, and her daughter, Melodie Jade Pierce-Rust.

Sadelle was born at home, the sole daughter of five children, in Heber Springs, AK on January 18, 1926 to Henry Plumer and Annabelle Smith. She had humble beginnings and remembered a charmed childhood on her parent’s cotton farm. She was curious about the world and all in it, excelling in her studies. Sadelle was very creative, loved singing with gospel choirs, and played piano at her family’s church.  As a young woman, she moved to Memphis, later joining her brothers in Richland in 1943.  She enjoyed being a part of Richland’s early days before marrying her husband, Leo, in 1946. They moved to California where their two sons were born, later making their permanent home in Richland where their three daughters were later born. Sadelle was active in Richland’s early Hanford Days and the founding days of Richland’s Orthopaedic Guild. She loved raising her children, homemaking, and enjoyed sharing her home’s beautiful gardens with all that visited. She proudly owned and operated her bridal and formal wear store in Kennewick, WA.

Sadelle’s three deceased siblings were Herthal Plumer ‘Buddy’, Hubert, and Theodore ‘Babe’. She is survived by her younger brother, Jack Smith of Kennewick, her two sons Richard Pierce of Suquamish, WA and Saipan, CNMI,  Robert Pierce of Pasco, WA and her two daughters Teresa Pierce of Renton, WA and Kim Delaney of Surfside, FL.

A public funeral will be held at Events at Sunset, Richland, WA, Wednesday, April 29, 12:00. In lieu of flowers, Sadelle would be pleased for any donations to be sent to The Master Gardener’s Washington State Chapter.

  • Your mother was Aunt Sis to me. I am Babe’s daughter. I remember the times when I was young and the visit to Washington, Your mom had a pet raccoon. It would come threw the kitchen window and wash food at the sick. I never forgot that. She had a beautiful voice and beautiful hair and was so nice. God Bless to all of you, I know she will be met by grandma smith and her brothers and your Dad..

  • My condolences to Sadelle’s surviving family.
I am writing this on behalf of my Father Max Don Hughes and
Florence E Hughes that have since passed on.
Also I would include myself with my 6 Sisters and Brothers.
My Sister Suzanne and I attended High School with Melodie and Teresa I believe Melodie graduated in 1972 same as I.
We would see them at picnic functions once in a while or at Annabelle’s house when I would visit along with Joe Steven and Gary Hulse. The memory that made a long lasting impression on me was a time that Sadelle came to our house because she had heard from the (Gent) ladies I think ,that I had a foot infection and as you know in those days you didn’t go to the Doctor much. Sadelle came in with some kind of remedy and very sternly would not take no for an answer which amazed me because I had never seen that done to my dad before with the exception of his Mother Ozella (Gent) Hughes she applied it and it healed very fast I was 9.

  • Sadelle and my mom Molly were very good friends for a long time. We spent many hours in the Pierce home and the Pierce kids went to menu Cone birthday parties. Sadelle was very creative and unique. I know she will be missed. My thoughts and prayers go out the the family.

  • My condolences to Sadelle’s surviving family. She was one of my most favorite clients during the years that I provided accounting services to her very successful business. I continued working with her and Leo after she retired. That was when I discovered her wonderful garden. I must admit I have been lax keeping in touch since I retired, but I look back on our relationship with fondness.

  • I grew up next door to my “fairy god-mother”. My parents, Francis and Millie Shuey lived next door to Sadelle and Leo. Sadelle called dad, Mr. Chewey. I don’t know when I met her but we moved next door in 4th grade. I babysat when I was 11 for Dick and Bob, later the three girls. I cleaned house and brushed Sadelles’ hair all the while listening to stories of her growing up with four brothers in Arkansas. Sadelle made me feel so good, she lent me a perfect dress for my dad’s friends funeral, two dresses for college balls and she made my wedding veil. She shared her favorite Russian Tea Ball cookie recipe with me. I loved to visit with her and see her garden and hear all about the kids. She and Leo were wonderful parents raising wonderful kids. I have the best memories. God Bless You All as you celebrate her life, I’ll see you all Wednesday.
