David George Smith “Smitty”
January 17, 1949 – April 29, 2015
David age 66, left to be with the Lord on Wednesday, April 29th at Kadlec Medical Center in Richland, Washington surrounded by his loved ones.
David was born in Lewiston, Idaho to parents Guy Raymond Smith and Merriel Deloris Smith.
David served our country from 1968 to 1977. He completed two tours of duty in Vietnam and a tour in Baumholder, Germany. During this time, he married the love of his life, Mary Jessica Cliber on July 18th 1971.
David has lived in the Tri-Cities area for over 60 years, where he raised his 3 children. He was known by all as a great man that never knew a stranger. He was a very kind and gentle husband, father, and grandfather. When David wanted to tell a story it was usually a never-ending one and kept all who were listening at bay for quite some time.
David worked as a welder at Hanford from July 31, 1978 to March 31, 2004 for Rockwell, Westinghouse, ICF Kaiser, Flour Daniel and Flour Hanford. David created many lasting friendships during those years.
David was truly a jack of all trades. His other passions in life included fishing, carpentry, and artistic metal work. He enjoyed seeing the fruits of his labor and was more than ecstatic when he finished building a beautiful home for his beloved family. David personally designed and built a pond which included a waterfall, adorned with his metal dragon that he was so very proud of.
David is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Mary Jessica Smith, brother Charles (Karen) Smith, sister Katherine Lopez, daughter Tacie (Chuck) Fitch, sons Jason (Ia) Smith and Justin (Wyndi) Smith. He is also survived by the other loves of his life his grandchildren - Terin, Alexis and Trenton Fitch, Shay, Ayden , Carmine and Kai Smith, Mattison Bowers, Veronica Nance and Peighton Smith.

So sorry to hear of Smitty’s passing. I came to see him at the hospital but was too late. I have a lot of good memories of Dave from the fab shop days. Man could he tell stories. Dave was a great welder and jack of all trades. He would always help people on and off the job and was great to work with. I think the last time I saw him was at Benton City Days a few years ago and wish we had talked longer. God Bless all of the family! Rod & Nita Berry
Mary, I won’t be able make it to the service on Saturday. I had prior camping reservations. I was so sorry to learn of the sudden event that led to Daves passing. My thoughts and prayers are with you and the rest of the family as you deal with this and move forward. Your friend, Dan
Hi Mary. I was so glad that I was able to see you and Tacy at the hospital. I have a lot of good memories of Dave when we worked in the “shops” together! Those were some good years, for sure.Dave was my best man when I got married. I remember you and Dave showed up with me at the Heidi Haus the first time I met Karen off the job. Dave was a lot of help to me when I first hired on out in the area. I was only 22 and Dave helped me quite abit. I was about as green as you can get. I remember about the madest I ever saw Dave get was when they told him he had to take down the christmas lights he had put up on the “jig fixture” in his work station. Said he couldn’t have them up because weren’t UL approved. : ) Dave loved to fish. I remember on more than one occassion he would stop and fish at Columbia Park and show up at work with a fish he had caught.
I’m sorry we kind of lost contact with each other over the years. You and Dave have always been so nice to me.
Dan Stephens, Kennewick
