Michael George Theo
07/28/1930 — 07/08/2015
From Richland, WA | Born in Pittsburgh, PA
Michael George Theo
Michael George Theo,
cherished and beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend
passed away at the age of 84 peacefully, surrounded by his family on July 8,
2015. He is survived and missed by his
son, George, his daughter-in-law, Tamsyn, his two grandchildren, Christos and
Kathryn, his brother-in-law James Gary, and his niece and nephew, Sophia Gary
and Bill Gary. His parents George and
Sophia Theo, sister, Virginia Gary and wife Kay T. Theo predeceased him.
He was born in Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania to George and Sophia Theo on July 28, 1930 and lived there until
1970 (with stops in Los Angeles and Las Vegas).
Mike and Kay moved to Richland in 1970, where he lived until 2013 when
he moved to Seattle, Washington to be closer to his son, daughter-in-law and
grandchildren. He was an active member
of the Greek Church. He was also a member
of the Pittsburgh Musicians’ Union Local 60-471 and the Richland Kiwanis.
Mike graduated from the
University of Pittsburgh with his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in
Engineering, and played in the Pitt Marching Band. After completing his degree, Mike accepted a
position with Westinghouse in Pittsburgh; which afforded him the opportunities
of working in the nuclear and rocket industries. During this time, he also continued to
perform in the Meltones, one of the first Greek bands that played the Tri-State
area. In the latter part of his career,
he worked at the Hanford Reservation in numerous areas, which included FFTF,
300 area, tank farms, B and N Reactor’s, etc.
After he retired, he was
happiest pouring wine at Kiona Winery (definitely try the Lemberger and
Cabernet – Mike the ultimate salesmen for Kiona), attending Seahawks games and
the two Super Bowls (yes, was still Steelers fan, but loved his Hawks!),
spending time with his grandchildren, fishing in Northern Canada with friends
and family, and enjoying the wine socials at the Ballard Landmark.
Mike was a beloved husband,
father, grandfather, uncle, and friend.
His dry wit, stories, and infectious smile will be greatly missed.
A funeral service will be
held at Events at Sunset in Richland on Tuesday, July 21 at 2pm; with graveside
to follow at Sunset Gardens in Richland.

I so enjoyed working with Mike at Kiona. He was a gentle soul and one of the nicest people I have known. He was always ready with a story. The young ladies that came in for tastings always loved being waited on by Mike. He will be missed.
Mike was the sweetest man and he and Kay were so so proud of George. In recent years I did enjoy seeing Mike at Kiona, and he loved seeing friends and visiting with everyone. My sympathy to you, George, and your family.
Dear George & Mike Theo’s Family,
Our deepest Sympathy on the passing of your beloved Father. He’s now safely home with Kay and God in heaven in perfect joy and everlasting life. He’ll be greatly missed, but all his happy memories and joyful loving spirit will always be with us. We thank God we got to know them and enjoy their friendship. Now they are together in eternal life. May your deep faith and trust in God give you all the strength to cope in your sorrow. Our thoughts, prayers, and God’s blessing be with you all.
Love,
Bel & Tom Bander & Family
We felt a great sadness upon hearing that Mike Theo has passed away. He and his wife, Kay, were one of the founding members of the Saint Nectarios Greek Orthodox Church in the Tri-Cities. In addition to his friendly can-do nature, Mike is especially remembered for his wonderful resonant singing. He served many years on the Church Parish Council including being Church President. May his memory be eternal.
George,
We are sorry about your Dad is gone. Your Dad and Mother were helping with my brother, Ted Cokis and his ex-wife Ethel and his son, Chris a lot. your parents were wonderful and friendly with us while we were visiting. We are hoping to comfort to you and your family. We lived here in Sun Lakes, AZ all a year around, we missed home town in Seattle.

We will greatly miss our friend, neighbor, co-worker, and father of George (who we’ve known since he was a toddler).
Mike was not only an engineer, and a musician, he was also a singer — which I first learned when Mike and I took a trip to Los Alamos in the 70’s. He and I and a few others ended up in one of the few places to eat in Los Alamos, a pizza parlor that had a piano player. We found almost instant harmony… something that lasted between Mike and I through several decades.
Mike was always so proud of George, and I cannot tell you how excited he was when George got married, and then (almost impossible) even more excited with TWO grandchildren!
Mike never lost sight of his Greek heritage; and in his mind, family always came first.
Margaret and I will miss our friend Mike…who always had the time to stop and talk for a bit. Gary & Margaret
I met Mike in cardiac rehab. He will always be remembered as one of my favorites. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.
Mike was our neighbor and always a friend to all who knew him. I think of him every time I pick a tomato in my garden as the soil in my garden came from his garden after he decided to spend time doing other things. He was a kind man with a comfortable wit that made conversations with him very enjoyable. He enjoyed sharing his Greek heritage and family happenings. He is missed!
