Dennis Laybourn
03/15/1943 — 08/24/2015
From Richland, WA | Born in Denver, CO
Dennis Laybourn
Dennis Rice Laybourn was born on March 15, 1943 in Denver, CO to parents Harland Ayres and Ruth Marie Laybourn. He was their second son after Michael Laybourn. They moved when he was two to Richland, WA, so Hal could work at Hanford. Siblings: Shanon Laybourn Smith, Hugh Laybourn and Daniel Laybourn followed.
He grew up terrorizing the south end of Richland and some say never stopped until his death at Kadlec Hospital of natural causes on August 24, 2015.
After graduating from Columbia High School in 1961, he married his junior high sweetheart and love of his life for over 60 years, Janice McGahey; joined the Navy and began his family, not necessarily in that order. Together they would have three great- children: Darren Laybourn, Tamara Laybourn Carswell, and Karina Laybourn Thorne, all born in Richland, WA and all graduated from Pasco High. He worked for Burlington Northern railroad supporting his family.
Some men are Catholics or Baptists; our Dad was a Cadillac man. He loved cruising in that car with the top down, wearing a hat, the blues, triumph motorcycles and living life large right up to the very end.
He will be deeply missed by the friends that he loved; his eight grandchildren: Josh Vandecar, Jennifer Vandecar, Spencer Fisher, Caitlin Laybourn, Sara Carswell, Cramer Laybourn, Brooklyn Fisher, and Payton Laybourn, his future great grandchildren, and the rest of our family.
A graveside service will be held at Sunset Gardens Cemetery in Richland Friday, August 28, 2015 at 2:00p.m. It will be held outdoors, where he loved being the most. A celebration of Dennis’ life will be held in his back yard following the graveside service; 353 Cottonwood Dr. in Richland WA. Come raise a glass in his honor.
Janice, I am so sorry for your loss. I’ve been thinking about you.
Just heard of Dennis’ passing from my sister. Will always remember him as one of the fun “good guys”. Only wish I’d kept better in touch over the years.
Janice, Please accept my sincerest condolences for your loss. Dennis and I grew up together in the south end together. Played lots of sandlot games during the summers as kids. He was a great baseball player and I have this memory of him from Pony League that has stuck with me. Who knows anymore after this many years if it is correct but I think in one game he hit 2 homeruns, one right handed and one left handed. Again my sympathy to you and your family.
Dennis was a great guy, he will be missed by all who knew him.
I had some great times with Dennis and his family.
I remember coming out of the gym at Col-High one day and here came Dennis doing a wheelie on his Triumph flying up the hill with kids scattering all around. He lived life to the fullest.

I’ve lost a true friend of 60+ years. We all have 3 or 4 really special friends, Dennis is one of mine. Dennis had a great
personality, could hoof-it with the best of them, and was a very good athlete, but didn’t always get a fair shake. His family meant so much to him. You will be missed my friend!!
I’ll miss Dennis. He was my friend from Jr. High at Carmichael, Col-Hi and beyond. I enjoyed chating with him at Jack Gardiner’s house and he always gave a wave when he drove past my house while I was sitting on the porch.
My condolences to you, Janice, and all his other family members and friends.
Dennis was really good company and “Holy Smokes” could he dance !
Every blessing to every one who will obviously miss him.
