From Richland, WA | Born in Weehawken, NJ

Gerald Caprio

After a year-long battle with cancer, Jerry Caprio passed away on September 21, 2015 in Richland, WA at the age of 73 with his children by his side.  Jerry was a loving dad, grandfather, great grandfather; son-in-law, and uncle.

Jerry was born in 1941 in Weehawken, NJ to Mario and Edith Caprio.  In his youth he loved fishing, hunting, and snow skiing; dancing, and playing at Silver Lake.  Jerry began his engineering career with Montgomery Engineering in 1959. Two years later he accepted an engineering position in West Germany.  While in Europe he met his future wife, Joanne, who was on a six-month vacation with her friends from Vancouver, B.C.  They were married on August 16, 1966 in Basel, Switzerland, and honeymooned throughout Europe.  Upon returning to the United States they resided in New Jersey and Kwajalein, Marshall Islands, before moving to Richland in 1972.

Jerry worked for a number of engineering firms, most notably Vitro Engineering beginning in 1973.  In 1986, Jerry and two others purchased the assets of Vitro Engineering’s Richland Office and formed SCM Consultants and he became vice president.  SCM was headquartered in Kennewick, WA and in March 1997 was acquired by Tetra Tech.  Jerry continued working for Tetra Tech until he retired in 2007.  During his 35-year career in the Tri-Cities Jerry made many dear and close friends.  He enjoyed spirited discussions about politics, the economy, and the overall state of affairs; he was always willing to share his opinion.

Outside of his professional engineering career, Jerry owned and managed over 20 one and two-bedroom rental homes in Richland, WA.  He served as president of Benton-Franklin Apartment Owners Association.  He was also an active member of the Richland Rod & Gun Club, a group of hunters, fishermen, and conservationists who share a common interest in the outdoors.  Jerry loved the outdoors, often spending days, weeks, and even months at a time in the mountains working on his properties or on a beach in Hawaii.

He is preceded in death by his wife of 41 years, Joanne, and his father, Mario, and mother, Edith.  He is survived by his daughter Lisa Robinson and husband, Brian; son Glenn Caprio and wife, Christina; grandchildren Hailey and Gianna Caprio, and Kaitlyn and Tyler Robinson; great grandson Kaden Robinson;  mother-in-law Violet Stewart; sister Mary May and husband, Stan;  sister-in-law Sheila Martens and husband Abe; three nieces and a nephew, as well as many dear friends.

A Graveside Service will be held at 11 a.m. on September 28, 2015 at Sunset Gardens Cemetery, followed immediately by a reception at Events at Sunset.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Chaplaincy, 1480 Fowler St., Richland, WA 99352.

  • Jerry was a cheerful, likable, smart, easy going, yet very determined man. He was a proud, loving and overall good father. His courting of his late wife and their marriage was like a storybook romance to him. I had wonderful, memorable conversations with him at the Columbia Basin Racquet Club and they led to our friendship. He was a sharp observer of events and insightful in his interpretations. His hard work and determination paid off for him. He could be an inspiration for many. I’ll miss him and remember him. To the family, I extend my condolences.

  • Lisa,Glenn and family. It was a pleasure to know your dad and mom throughout the years. One of the fondest memories I have was the day he managed to get me up on a pair of water skis along with those crazy uncles of mine. That is a day I will never forget as I can still see them laughing. Also having the opportunity to work with your dad at SCM was a great experience as well; to see his smiling face whenever I would stop by his office and chat briefly because as you know, your dad was “all work”. You are all now and will be in our prayers during this difficult time. Lots of love

  • I share the loss of Jerry with the Caprio family. I will remember Jerry as an enthusiastic business man optimistic over the growth of the community and contributor of support towards the cleanup of the Hanford reservation. He will also be remembered for his fondness of the natural world and his love for being a part of it.

  • To: All the Caprio Family,
It was such a pleasure to have known Jerry. I met him when my husband and I became god-parents to his grandchildren. Jerry was a very interesting and loving person. I will miss all of our family gatherings at Glenn’s home as well as mine. Jerry and I talked a lot about the Northeast. I am from N.Y. and Jerry from N.J. We grew up just a few miles from each other. We shared a lot of laughes together. He was so much fun to be around. I will sincerely miss that wonderful man and all our conversations.

  • I am so sorry for your loss. I knew your dad quite well when we worked at Federal Electric in Paramus, NJ in the very 1960’s. We reconnected 6 years ago while I was in Portland and had a long and wonderful talk catching up over dinner. We’ve kept in touch and although we didn’t always see eye to eye, I am saddened by the loss of a good friend but will always have the wonderful memories.

  • I met Jerry on Kwajalein when I was 8 years old. Jerry and Joanne became lifelong friends of my parents. I have known Jerry all my life.
I knew 2 Jerrys; the first being the spirited conversationalist of politics, and of what is right and what is wrong. The other Jerry that I knew would do anything for those in his life. He has been a fantastic friend to my family since 1969. There was not a thing he wouldn’t do to help us. We didn’t always agree on his point of view, but I knew, deep down, there was the other Jerry that we loved for 46 years, who would give heart and soul to be there for us.
Thank you, Jerry, for all you have done for us, taught us, and for making us think!
    You will be missed.

  • In Memoriam of Jerry Caprio
Members of the Richland Rod and Gun Club were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Jerry Caprio on September 212, 2015. Jerry joined the Club in 1976. He was elected to the Board of Trustees in 2010, 2011 and 2012 and received the Club’s 25 year Belt Buckle in 2001. He also was Chairman of The Audit Committee and performed an audit of the Club’s Financial Records for many years. Jerry loved hunting, fishing and the outdoors. He was an active member and could be counted on to volunteer for many of the Club’s activities. He was a pleasure to work with and will be greatly missed by the club.

  • I knew Jerry for only a few short years through a mutual friend. What was obvious to me was that Jerry was a very patriotic man who had a fierce sense of right and wrong and an a passion for educating others through politics. I did not always agree with his point of view, but I admired him greatly for the fervor that he would argue it. I will miss him and our discussions. I can only hope to have the strength of my convictions as Jerry always did.

  • I am so sorry for the loss of your Dad, Jerry. He was a real gentleman. I had wonderful memories of the times he spent with my family. I enjoyed his visits and am truly sad to have seen him suffer like that and now he is finally at peace. Jerry loved his family but now it is time for him to have his morning coffee with his wonderful wife, Jo!
