John R. Baker

John Baker passed away September 10, 2015 in Richland, WA and was born on July 16, 1916 in Opal, WY. He was the last living person of his family. His father died when John was five, his widowed mother raised all six children on a farm in Utah.

He married Hazel K. Zesiger in 1938, and they celebrated their 71st anniversary before her death in 2009.

John served as a sergeant in the Army and was part of the occupation of Japan. He then worked as a Captain for the Hanford Patrol.

John R. Baker achieved his goal of making it to his 100th year. In July he turned 99 and was set to live to 101 and more. His legacy to family and friends will continue far beyond that! This legacy includes: humility and patience under reduced circumstances, gratitude for the simple ordinary events of each day, and a deeply centered zest for life. Also maintaining a sense of humor throughout trying times, enjoyment of honest work- always projecting in the basement, determination to improve himself by doing each job well, having heartfelt dedication to his family, country and to the Lord.

Above all the giving of willing service to others. As a family we watched in awe as he tenderly cared for his ailing wife. This steadfast devotion to his spouse of seventy-one years will not be forgotten. Nor will the sunny nature of his countenance when greeting each family member. Every visitor was given a warm welcome with a loving send-off. John will be greatly missed by his son and daughter and their spouses, eight grandchildren; twenty-six great-grandchildren; and his great-great-grandchild named after John’s father, Edwin.

  • So sorry to read of John’s passing. I remember him as a fun, loving person. We spent lots of our high school time at his and Hazel’s home.

  • I am so sad to hear of Mr Baker’s passing. I was his paper carrier for 10 years and always loved visiting with him every month. And it never failed these last few years that I would see him every year at Winco around Christmas time. He always thought my name was Amber who is my daughter and after the first few times I stopped correcting him. He was such a dear man and friend that I will always remember. He is in God’s hands and his wife’s arms again. You will always be in my heart.
